"Kate and Sam are saddened to announce that they separated earlier this year," said a statement released on behalf of the couple on Monday. "The split is entirely amicable and is by mutual agreement."

The Academy winning actress — who worked with her Oscar-winning film director husband on 2008's Revolutionary Road — was noticeably solo on the red carpet throughout award season. In fact, she hasn't been photographed with Sam – whom she married in 2003 -- in nearly a year and they’ve been living completely separate lives.

"Their relationship has really collapsed, but they remain very close friends," says an insider. "Kate says the passion has left — she loves Sam, but only as a friend. He was content to stay in all the time; she loves to seize the day." Adding: "They're just two ships in the night these days."

For now, Kate – who has son Joe, 6, with Sam and daughter Mia, 9, from her first marriage to Jim Threapleton -- remains in the family’s apartment in NYC’s Chelsea neighborhood, Star can exclusively report. Sam primarily resides in the nearby West Village.

“They are being very mature and considerate about the failure of their marriage,” says the insider. “They are extremely civilized about it. Kate wants to make it as amicable as possible."
