I think this is wrong .. though .. in reality .. we do not know .. if the Adi Sankara we are talking about from 800 AD is the same person who established Kanchi Peetam .. Kanchi Peetam has it that a "Adi Sankara" established the maTham .. in 400 BC .. it even has the chronology of different Sankaracharyas .. it has enough proofs of its heritage .. though the building in which it is now operating is a relatively new one .. the much older ones can be found in Kaladi .. also there is a Sri Chakram in Kanchi by the Adi Sankara himself .. But what I feel is .. there are different incarnations of Adi Sankara (I believe he is Sankara Himself) .. the incarnation of Sankara in 400 BC could have established the Kanchi Peetam ..
well said .. perfectly put .. but as Krishna tells Arjuna in Gita, people who sacrifice themselves to God and work towards moksha without thinking about the results surely attain divinity .. I believe Shiridi Sai Baba attained it through his "karma" .. where as I cannot say the same regarding Puttaparthi Sai Baba or any other Babas/Swamis .. but I surely can feel there are good number of holymen outside the classical Hindu definition that you quoted .. one such person is Vivekananda and Ramakrishna Paramahamsa .. There is no standardization as Swami/Baba or something. There is only one Hindu definition of Sanyasi for which there is a formal process. In terms of common man a Sanyasi wears saffron clothing. But that does mean that all those who wear are formal Sanyasi. The peeThas established by Adi Sankaracharya, Sringeri Karnataka, Puri Orissa, Saurastra Gujarat and Badarinath Kashmir follow Smartha paramapara there the peeThadhipathi's are formally chosen based on a process. Kanchi though gained popularity on par with other peeTha is not actually established by Adi Sankara. Tridandi peeTha's are vaishnava peeTha's like the one headed by Chinna Jiyar. I don't know the history of nityananda swami. I saw pictures yesterday that were posted about charity work they are doing - is it the same swamiji? Is he getting donations b'coz of his charity work or is he getting donations b'coz he is a "swamiji"? Will people not give if he is a swamiji who is doing charity work and yet is sleeping with another woman? I think the answer is yes. A lot of people are doing charity work, not all of them get donations. But if you are a swamiji, the flow is almost assured. I think as a society we have high expectations on people. If this man wasn't wearing the swamiji brand nobody would care who he is sleeping with. Let's say he only has one woman as his sleeping partner, we still condemn him for that b'coz he is supposed to be a "sanyasi". In modern history one who gave up all physical pleasures is almost impossible to find IMHO. | ||
