âTelangana not in the interest of Muslims' J.S. Ifthekhar Asaduddin Owaisi Hyderabad: As the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) gears up to celebrate the 52nd years of its revival, the Telangana question stares it in the face. Though the party tries to be ambiguous on the issue, it is pretty clear on bifurcation of the State. Formation of Telangana, it is felt, will not be in the interest of the Muslims at all. The Majlis thinks it will inevitably result in its adversary, BJP, emerging stronger. âSuch a scenario will not only be bad for the Muslim community but for secular polity as well,â says Majlis president, Asaduddin Owaisi. Motorcycle rally He is expected to do some plain talking on Tuesday after unfurling the party flag at Dar-us-Salam. The Hyderabad MP will come to the party headquarters in a motorbike rally from his Himayathnagar residence. Wouldn't the creation of Telangana benefit the Majlis? Yes, definitely. With seven MLAs, the Majlis is able to assert itself in a House of 294. After formation of Telangana, it can play a bigger role in a House of just 119. âBut I am not thinking on improving the political fortunes of Majlis alone. I am concerned about my community at large,â says Mr. Owaisi. Given its shifting stand and stuck with the âAndhra party' label, the Telugu Desam will be all but finished in Telangana with desertion of BCs, its vote bank in the region. The Majlis also sees the TRS gradually weakening or getting merged with the Congress. This political vacuum would be filled not by the Left parties but by the BJP. A politically strong BJP in a smaller State will not be in the interest of the minorities. âThe Muslims will become an easy target,â says Mr. Owaisi. Will the Majlis express its apprehensions before the Srikrishna panel? âWe will take a decision,â is all that Mr. Owaisi would say. Meanwhile, the party is getting ready for a quick tour of Andhra and Rayalaseema regions on the Muslim reservation issue before the public meeting scheduled in Hyderabad on March 13. The Majlis, which is part of the Muttahida Majlise Amal, will also approach the Supreme Court on the matter. As the Majlis steps into 53rd year of its political journey, the stress will be on improving is base in Telangana and Rayalaseema. Political empowerment alone, it feels, will end injustices of all kinds and help Muslims get a fair share of the national resources pie. |
