its almost as if we are being led to believe that there is some truth, i believe the conquest of truth is the reason for where we are, spiritually, technologically and socially. men who are lost in this conquest of truth, end up forming new cults(also religions), but the "Truth" has been rarely realized.

is there a so called "Truth" really? well, the question itself is the beginning of conquest isnt it, if it is there what is it? if it is not there do we really know it is not there?
the world of appearances may or may not be real, or both may and may not be real - or may be indescribable; or may be real and indescribable, or unreal and indescribable; or in the end may be read and unreal and indescribable - its all Syadvada

Good point :-) I guess, maybe it comes in cycles? Like, we had too much of the "freedom" and built society for 10000 odd years? and the rat race now makes us feel all shackled?

As a kid, I was uber-competitive. I had to win EVERYTHING and God knows, I won a good deal. Yet, all the running I did, seems to have made me very hollow. A very empty feeling, if you will. I guess I started questioning the purpose of the race and the goal and bam! went into a metaphysical overdrive, where you say - eff the race. There should be a greater purpose to it all. fortunately or unfortunately, i am atleast "rat walking" as I dont know if I should hit the "eject" button for the remnant of these societal "obligations" like this chris dude.

The idea of breaking away free is compelling..and the dialogues have enough meat to give goosebumps.. kakapothe naa point entante.. at one point or the other humans will have social need or crave for such need.. then whole rat race and caeer thing will come into a perspective kada..

What I mean to say is - the rat race, career and security or comfort things are byproducts of man's social need and that directly negates his desire for absolute freedom.. Padi mandi lo judge cheyabadtham ani alochana ye kada mananni ee rat race lo parigettela chesedi..is it not.

got it dude, little comedy try chesa.

on a serious note, just seeing your posts and others' posts, i can relate a lot to this dude - though I am not as courageous as him to hit the woods (I might be totally missing the context, as my frame of reference is not the movie or the book, but just the posts on this DB).

I have been wandering in the metaphysical sense of the term and not so much in the physical sense, but after about 15yrs off wandering, I still dont know what the "TRUTH" is supposed to be. Dont even feel like I am anywhere even close.

"Careers are 20th century inventions ...I dont want one.... "

That particularly resonates with me, having burnt my career at the altar of the so-called "TRUTH". I have run the rat-race for a good number of years, and let me say no-thanks to this pursuit of a "career". I hope I will meet a better fate than this dude. :-)

Wise men in their bad hours have envied
The little people making merry like grasshoppers
In spots of sunlight, hardly thinking
Backward but never forward, and if they somehow
Take hold upon the future they do it
Half asleep, with the tools of generation
Foolishly reduplicating
Folly in thirty-year periods; the eat and laugh too,
Groan against labors, wars and partings,
Dance, talk, dress and undress; wise men have pretended
The summer insects enviable;
One must indulge the wise in moments of mockery.
Strength and desire possess the future,
The breed of the grasshopper shrills, "What does the future
Matter, we shall be dead?" Ah, grasshoppers,

Death's a fierce meadowlark: but to die having made
Something more equal to centuries
Than muscle and bone, is mostly to shed weakness.
The mountains are dead stone, the people
Admire or hate their stature, their insolent quietness,
The mountains are not softened or troubled
And a few dead men's thoughts have the same temper

I didnt see in to the wild movie and I dont intend to but the absolute freedom anedi konchem tempt chesindhi post veyadaniki.. so posting here.

Elcaminocapastrino:

"It should not be denied... that being footloose has always exhilarated us. It is associated in our minds with escape from history and oppression and law and irksome obligations, with absolute freedom"

Seriously our(humans) thought process is paradoxical.. Oka vypu family insitution ni set chesi mana yokka social need ni fulfill chesukotaniki thega try chestham and at the same time we complain that we are bounded by obligations and crave for absolute freedom. I dont get it...

Note- I am not judging the character .. i dont know the context of the dialogue etc.. my post is purely on the above lines and its meaning.
