Tirumala major tourist attraction Staff Reporter It accounts for 80 per cent of pilgrim tourists Government mulls âpromotion campaign' to create a brand image of the State After Tirupati, Visakhapatnam is another must on any tourist's itinerary HYDERABAD: The State has become a hub for pilgrimage tourism. Of the 12.9 crore domestic tourists that visit the State every year, 90 per cent of them are visiting sacred places and other places on the pilgrimage map. And not surprisingly, Tirupati tops the destination for the pilgrimage-bound, attracting 80 per cent of the pilgrim tourists, said Tourism Secretary Jayesh Ranjan here on Thursday. Top in domestic tourists However, he pointed out, although the State had been numero uno among all States in terms of domestic visitors, when it came to foreign tourists, it hovered at seventh position attracting only 6.5 lakh foreign visitors. The State government was trying to woo tourists, foreign and domestic, by providing diversity and variety at the 50 most-visited tourist locations, Mr. Ranjan said. Following Tirupati is the scenic seaside city of Visakhapatnam, another must on any tourist's itinerary. Flaunting blue beaches, it draws tourists mostly from Orrisa, West Bengal, Jharkhand and other States in the eastern part of the country who flock there to spend long hours in leisure. Hyderabad, on the other hand, attracts business people hosting conventions, meetings, along with a liberal mix of historical tourism. Plea to private sector The government is also planning to rope in a professional agency and launch a promotion campaign to create a âvisible and memorable brand imageâ of the State, Mr. Ranjan said at an interactive meeting on â Development of Tourism Industry in Andhra Pradesh' and urged the private sector to seize the opportunity as many avenues will open up once new tourism policy is out in about three months. Bringing into focus popular tourist destinations like Thailand and Sri Lanka, K. Harishchandra Pradesh, president of Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers Commerce and Industry (FAPCCI), which organised the meeting, pointed out some areas that deserved attention. Safety of tourists J.S. Karunendra, Chairman of FAPCCI's Tourism Committee, raised the issue of safety of tourists and urged the government to create a tourist protection police force and position police stations strategically near tourism destinations. |
