sorry it is 4.25.

Total savings = 7
1 D = 7/2 + 0.5 = 4
2 D = ( 7 - 4 )/2 + 0.5 = 2
3 D = ( 7 - 4- 2 )/2 + 0.5 = 1

second daughter has 2 dollars so she needs 4.25

Last question:

Two bottles of the same volume were filled with a mixture of water and juice. The ratios of water to juice in these bottles are 2 : 1 and 4 : 1 respectively. If we pour the mixture from both bottles into one container, what is the ratio of the volume of water to the volume of juice?

144? I think my method would be easier to explain to a 10th grader than 6th grader, though. :-)

Much respect to house wives and elementary/middle school teachers. Teaching kids is one of the biggest challenges in life. Ideally speaking, elementary teachers deserve twice the pay scale of teachers/educators at college.

Are you smarter than a sixth grader? Then solve this puzzle

Cindy wishes to arrange her coins into X piles, each consisting of the same number of coins, Y.
Each pile will have more than one coin and no pile will have all the coins.
If there are 13 possible values for Y given all of the restrictions, what is the smallest number of coins she could have?

Telugu_times:

too late, but here is another way to try at it.
In forward journey... it takes 6 minutes for 1 mile (60 minutes/10 miles)
In return journey... it takes 7.5 minutes for 1 mile (60 minutes/8 miles)
On an average, it takes (6+7.5)/2 = 6.75 minutes for 1 mile
Therefore, how many miles can be run in 27 minutes?
27 divided by 6.75 minutes = 4 miles

...
665,666,667,668,668,670

...
995,996,997,998,999

starting from 555 (which has all the digits greater than 4)
555,556,557,558,559,560 one set. next set 565,566,568,569,570...next set 575,576,578,579.590...next set 585,586,587,588,589,590...next set 595,596,597,598,599,600

ala peti set lo oka number so each hundred above 500 will have 5...
ex: 500+ lo 558,570,576,588,600 5
600+ lo 656, 666, 678, 690, 696 5
alagey 756, 768, 780, 792, 798 5
856, 870, 876, 888, 900 5

we start at 555 and work up. The first integer larger than 555 that is divisible by 6 is 558. Starting from there we have 558, 576, 588. The first integer larger than 655 that is divisible by 6 is 660. Starting from there we have 666, 678, 696. The first integer larger than 755 that is divisible by 6 is 756. Starting from there we have 756, 768, 786, 798. The first integer larger than 855 that is divisible by 6 is 858. Starting from there we have 858, 876, 888. Finally, the first integer larger than 955 that is divisible by 6 is 960. Starting from there we have 966, 978, 996.

(4 * 3) + (1 * 4) = 12 + 4 = 16

laurie left home and ran to the lake at 10 mi/h. she ran back home at 8 mi/h. if the entire trip took 27 min,how far did she run in all?

Average speed for the round trip = 2ab/(a+b) = 2*10*8/(10+8) = 160/18 = 80/9 mph
Time taken for the round trip = 27 min = 27/60 = 9/20 hours

Round trip Distance = 80/9 * 9/20 = 80/20 = 4 miles

Mvssr75:

Laurie's Avg Speed = (10+8)/2= 9 mil /h

Distance travelled = 9 * 27/60 = 236 /60 = 3.933 miles

No! That's wrong. Average for rates such as speeds should not be calculated using Arithmetic mean, one needs to use Harmonic Mean for speeds.

Dts:

Average Speed = 8.888889 mph.

Average Speed is the reciprocal of average of reciprocal speeds: one should use harmonic mean for speeds.
Thus distance covered (8.88888888889 (miles / hour)) * 27 minutes = 4 miles

The average I calculated is using Harmonic mean of 10 and 8 MPH which is the reciprocal of (1/10+1/8)/2 i.e., 8.88889 MPH.

Mvs,

9 * 27 = 243 not 236

and you can't average out two speeds that way......check it out here....

too late, but here is another way to try at it.
