Itanagar, Feb. 8: The All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union today made a public spectacle of aggression against Chinas claim over the state, burning Chinese goods in a bonfire and banning the popular cuisine from menu cards.

The show of defiance came in the wake of its one-week ultimatum to the people of the state, especially the business community, calling for a ban on China-made products in Arunachal Pradesh in December last year.

Following a request by the Arunachal Chamber of Commerce and Industries, the student organisation decided to extend its ultimatum from a week to a month for the business community to dispose of all Chinese goods in the state.

Today, hundreds of members of the union burnt the effigy of Chinese premier Hu Jintao, carried placards and shouted anti-China slogans at several places in and around Itanagar, Naharlagun, Nirjuli and Banderdewa in protest against that countrys undue territorial claim over Arunachal Pradesh.

We are proud Indians, We are born Indian and will die Indian, the placards screamed.

The Akashdeep Market complex in Itanagar turned into the epicentre of protest with hundreds of AAPSU members assembling and burning the effigy of Hu Jintao along with Chinese products that ranged from apparel, toys, electronic gadgets to mobile phones.

The Northeast is a ma- jor market and transit route of Chinese products, mainly electronic items, mobile handsets and readymade clothes, to other parts of the country. Most of the Chinese goods which make their way into the region are smuggled.

AAPSU president Takam Tatung said the purpose of the protest meeting was to expose Chinas expansionist policy to the world.

We resorted to a strong protest mode like burning the effigy of Chinese premier because of Chinas territorial claim over Arunachal Pardesh, which is an integral part of India. The Chinese claim over our state is totally illogical and its nefarious expansionist agenda is something that we wanted to protest against tooth and nail. The ban will be imposed on all sorts of Chinese products. We want Chinese goods to be destroyed in the state, otherwise we will take our own course of action. AAPSU will not hesitate to forcefully destroy and burn products from shops, besides imposing a fine of Rs 10,000 on shopowners and Chinese food vendors, Tatung said.

The union had also staged a protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, where hundreds of its activists courted arrest in front of the Chinese embassy in the first week of November last year.

Tatung questioned the integrity of the Centre, which he alleged did not seem interested to sound a stern message to China.

AAPSU wants to know whether Arunachal Pradesh is negotiated in a hard bargain with China. India never objected to Chinese decision to go ahead with construc- tion of a dam over Yarlung Tsangpo, that is the Brahmaputra in India. Here comes the justification of asking the Centre whether it is keen to protect the territorial integrity of the country, he added.

A restaurateur, who did not wish to be named, admitted that the AAPSU ban would deal a big blow to his business but added that there was very little he could do.
