MUMBAI: It was father Amitabh Bachchan that turned the fortunes of Star Plus with his debut on television in the game show Kaun Banega Crorepati. Almost a decade later, son Abhishek has had a remarkable opening, beating his Bollywood peers Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan to post record ratings as audiences hooked on to the weekend primetime game show National Bingo Night.

Junior Bachchan surged ahead of all other celebrities on first-day ratings for the last two years, according to Tam data. Of course, he had the support of his 'Paa' who came as the first contestant.

The debut episode of National Bingo Night on Colors clocked a TVR of 5.1 on 23 January, making the show the highest rated non-fiction launch in the last two years.

"With the kind of hype Colors had created around Bingo and the debut of Bachchan with 'Abhishek Araam Classes', there was a curiosity factor that pulled in new audiences. Also, the stickiness has gone up due to a mix of celebrities, games and Bachchan," says a media analyst.

Bingo also catapaulted the channel to new heights with 365 GRPs, adding 50 GRPs (gross rating points) from the prior week, and fortifying its leadership position in the Hindi general entertainment space.

As per Tam data for week ended 23 January, apart from Bingo, Colors’ fiction shows Laado and Uttaran top the ratings chart with peak TVRs of 7.7 and 7.5 respectively.

Meanwhile, Star Plus, which premiered the Salman Khan starrer Wanted, added 34 GRPs from its previous week’s tally to close with 293 GRPs for the week under review. The movie itself got a TVR of 4.
