This is not completely true. During earlier rig-vedic samhitha times, animal sacrifice was the most important ritual. That was the time when the spiritual seekers were trying to understand the meaning of sacrifice. Later in aranyaka times, the trend changed. However, in later upanishad times vegetarianism was emphasized. So, vedas dont have a firm opinion on killing of animals. Vedas have lots of understandably contradictory statements. Its actually quite contrary. Non-vegetarianism was always there in vedic societies before budha.
