But the latest news about Pawan Kalyan playing Jesus Christ in a forthcoming Telugu movie, for which he is currently shooting in Jerusalem, has raised quite a few eyebrows. Though actor Krishna portrayed Jesus in Santhi Sandesham years ago, and Vijay Chander played the same role in Karunamayudu, Pawan Kalyan's portrayal of Christ has made movie buffs sit up and take notice. Opinion among them is divided on whether he is the right man for the role. E. Roy, a working professional has very definite views on the subject. "Pawan Kalyan playing the role of Jesus is not just weird, but indigestible. Going by his off-screen scandals and rocky marriage, he definitely shouldn't be playing such a holy character. Even on screen, he hasn't played peaceful roles nor has he given out a positive image. Being a Christian, I think it hurts to see someone like Pawan Kalyan play the role of Jesus Christ. Personally I wouldn't want to watch him in that role. Maybe Chiranjeevi would suit the part better considering the amount of charity he has done." An actor's established image is usually a prerequisite for any role and if he or she portrays a character contrary to it, the movie often bombs. Actor Vijay Chander reportedly stopped smoking while he played the role of Christ in a movie to show his respect. If that has been the dedication with which actors have played the role in the past, how far do Tollywood buffs think Pawan Kalyan could go? Tabitha Hansika, a 19-year-old says even an actor who looks similar to Jesus could fit the bill, but not Pawan Kalyan, "As far as I know, he doesn't have a good image off-screen. I've heard of him having a turbulent married life and other scandalous news which I don't think will go down well with the audience. At least someone who looks close to Christ can play the role, but I am not so sure about how Pawan plans to do justice to the role," she says. While his on-screen and off-screen image is under scrutiny, others feel it's a political gimmick. "Forget about his on-screen image, that wouldn't make much difference if he had a decent off-screen image, but he has failed to do that too. I feel he must be doing this to gain sympathy from fans as his brother is a political leader. If he suddenly wants to turn into an angel after being a devil, it will not go down well with the audience," says Dinesh Fernandes, a student. How the movie will fare or how well he will suit the role is anybody's guess, but clearly it will be an uphill task for the actor if he wants to pull it off. | ||
