Book Review : Imagining India or Wishing it away?? In his new book Imagining India, Nandan Nilekani documents his thought-process on the reasons for urban India's serendipitous success, but unfortunately and wrongly imagines it to be the success of India at large. The book also attempts to document some ideas for improving the circumstances of not just urban India, but of the whole of India. While we highly appreciate the author's efforts in meticulously researching and codifying India's (read "urban India's") status quo today, we give the book a thumbs-down in terms of providing ideas or thoughts which can lead India in the 21st century. That sort of thought-leadership material is completely absent in the book. In the light of the fact that urban India is getting increasingly divorced from rural India and even speaks a different language (of which divorce the author is an advocate even if unawares), and the fact that the author does not display understanding of the ground realities of rural India or for that matter the role of mother-tongue in education, the book fails to give any sort of solution for the "whole of India". This utterly restricted view of India makes one question if the author really wishes away India at large and originally wanted the book to be titled Imagining English Language Call Centers in India. Fairly accurate first part but disappointingly restrictive in idea of India As already mentioned, the retrospective analysis of urban India's post-independence success is fresh, fairly accurate and bold - as long as it's not confused with the success of India as a whole - which confusion the book is full of. Anyone concerned with India as a whole tends to be disappointed with the lack of insight into what must be done in order to ensure that the serendipitous urban success reaches far and wide, and more importantly, in order that it sustains. In the first part of the book, called "Ideas that have arrived", Nandan documents six things - or rather the "evolution" in the way we think about them - which have in his mind propelled India's growth in the recent past (in reality, it's only the growth of urban India). They are: population, entrepreneurship, english, technology, globalization and democracy. In short, Nandan believes that we've started considering population as an asset instead of a liability; entrepreneurs as respectable members of the society instead of hostile; english as the language of "social and economic mobility" instead of as the language of oppression; technology as an enabler of growth instead of as a threat to labor; globalization as aiding India instead of harming; and democracy as something which has matured instead of something India wasn't ready for. We believe this analysis is fairly accurate if not complete, except for the fact that none of this applies to more than a tenth of India's population (barring perhaps the infatuation with English in which non-urban India blindly but understandably imitates the urban). Other three parts are a let-down The other three parts of the book lack the fresh analytical juice to be found in the first. In them, Nandan lets down those who might have looked up to him as an influential thinker whose thoughts and ideas for the future have the power to transform India; he merely documents what went on, what's going on, and a bit of what can be almost mathematically derived from the foregoing two if we let the engine run by itself with folded hands - what may happen. Clearly, that's not thought-leader material. The book has some factual mistakes too, which stem from the author's distance from ground realities and inexperience in extra-corporate matters. While the author feels that Hindi Imposition is a thing of the past, we know and you know that that's far from reality. We invite the author to have a look at some of our blog-posts both in English and Kannada on this matter and ascertain for himself how rampant Hindi Imposition is even to this date. Slighting the role of India's languages is unscientific and disastrous The author's slighting of the power of India's languages and their role in education, and the implicit and unscientific assumption that English has what it takes to pull the whole of India out of misery is a glaring, unforgivable mistake which is central to the book's thesis. We expected the author to have been more scientific than that. Also, instead of dry documentation of how English was regarded as a language of oppression and has now become the language of "economic and social mobility" (the very concept of social mobility due to a foreign language stinks of British oppression), what one expects from a leader is answers to difficult questions with respect to English. Leaders in India must dare to ask these questions: What should English be tomorrow? How should we plan the role of English in India tomorrow? How do we see to it that we neither loose quick BPO bucks, nor regard with neglect the latent talent of the majority of Indians to whom English is a foreign language? How can we build a system which taps the inherent talent in India's children instead of imposing a system which neglects everything they are from day one at school, but at the same time make sure we don't lose easy money from the Infosyses of India? In not even asking - let alone answering - these and other difficult questions, Nandan Nilekani completely disappoints the reader Mr KCR tear down this wall! |

I dont understand sonia/rahul's strategy....when will RAHUL become the PM if they keep looking for puppets to fill in the PM's seat...asalu 2009 elections ayipoyina ventane RAHUL ni PM cheyyalsindhi.. no point in having three people looking after the PM's seat...sonia is one center of power, rahul another center(heir apparent) and finally MMS name sake PM...if the gandhi's have no confidence in rahul to become the PM they should have stuck with him...could have had priyanka instead of him....and finally NANDAN will not be the best choice for the gandhi's....they will never be able to control him and he will not stick with pseudo-policies of the congress |

Older » .September 4, 2010 • 1:08 pm .The Nandan Nilekani wild card When Shekhar Gupta writes two Op-eds on the drift in the UPA it’s a signal of sorts. Before we get too carried away let us be clear this is not a “Dileep Padgaonkar” moment (for those who were not old enough, Dileep Padgaonkar who was once TOI’s chief editor, famously claimed it was the second most important job in the country). The reason this is a signal is because of the extent to which the Shekha Gupta editorial bureau in the Indian Express had been invested in the Manmohan Singh PMO until recently. So when Shekhar Gupta starts to describe the UPA 2.0 as lameduck it is a sign of diminishing future returns from that investment. Now conventional wisdom would have us believe that this maybe about an imminent succession to the heir apparent. But then Shekhar Gupta is not exactly betting on a heir apparent lead PMO. In fact Shekhar Gupta is not hedging his bets on any of the known suspects taking over the PMO while being quite forthright in describing the incumbent as lame duck. This begs the question – what does he know that the rest of us don’t ? Perhaps it’s that the heir apparent doesn’t exactly want to hold public office ? The drift in the Congress is better explained if we were to go with the working hypothesis that Rahul Gandhi does not want to become Prime Minister. The public jostling between Digvijay Singh and P. Chidambaram and the running down of Kapil Sibal by lightweight Members of Parliament is indicative of the high stakes game that’s underway, positioning for a post Manmohan Singh scenario. But then who says Sonia Gandhi is about to replace a non-politician with a career politician ? Sonia Gandhi’s ascent to the longest Presidency has been marked by an emasculation of career politicians. Narasimha Rao has all but been erased from public memory. Sitaram Kesri had no idea what hit him before e faded into the oblivion. Arjun Singh paid a steep price to retain some semblance of self-respect. While destiny took care of potential challengers the rebels like Pawar have long been cut to size. The only career politicians in the Congress with a future are those who have completely submitted themselves to the basic Nehru Gandhi Contract. We are already witnessing in Andhra what happens when the Nehru-Gandhi contracts is subordinated by a regional satrap. So as much as Chidambaram, Digvijay Singh and Kapil Sibal maybe positioning themselves for a post Manmohan scenario it is highly unlikely the Nehru-Gandhi contract will be subordinated in favor of a career politician. What about the Minority/Dalit card ? This trial balloon has been floated before. The Congress is acutely aware that it needs to play both the vote banks subtly to be in power. It will dole out symbolic posts but won’t go beyond that. Which brings us to the question of what kind of non-politician serves Nehru-Gandhi interests best ? It can’t be NGO-activists of the NAC mould. They have their uses outside the business of government. But more importantly the Nehru-Gandhis need the aura of benevolence almost exclusively to themselves. Their brand of messianic politics depends on that exclusivity. Hence the man running the business of government must be a technocrat in the Manmohan Singh mould to appeal to the Middle Class while not diluting the Nehru-Gandhi brand in the eyes of the BPL class. Which brings us to the question of which Technocrat might that be ? Of all the technocrat lateral entrants to the Congress extended family, Nandan Nilekani has been the most low profile, keeping above controversies while maintaining a laser focus on his job. As a successful author with a reformist mindset and a wealth creator he is a middle class role model in the Manmohan Singh mould. He also is a unique position bridging Rahul Gandhi’s 2 India’s though the UID project. If one were to hedge bets on the most likely non-politician to succeed Manmohan Singh it would be Nandan Nilekani – a choice with the potential to blow the wind of the sails of the Opposition. This is not to say the choice is not without it’s risks. As a Corporate product a Nilekani’ ability to manage political contradictions will be far more limited than a Manmohan Singh. But then the Nehru-Gandhi brand has demonstrated tremendous resilience in weathering political failings. So if indeed Rahul Gandhi opts out of public office and a technocrat is sprung up, what does it mean to the BJP ? The BJP’s or a 3rd front’s odds of electoral success in a Lok Sabha election largely rest on monumental bungling by the Congress. To date, despite all the political setbacks, the credibility of the Nehru Gandhi remains unaffected. For the current electoral trend in favor of the Congress to reverse, a necessary precondition is an issue on which the Nehru-Gandhis are held personally responsible causing irreversible damage to their credibility. It would be a foolish strategy on the part of the BJP to hitch it’s fortunes on the likelihood of that happening. By staying out of office the Nehru-Gandhis have bought sufficient insurance. In the absence of such monumental bungling and if challenged by a non-politician technocrat, the BJP will face a steep challenge in finding it’s path back to power with most of it’s current leadership weighed down by political baggage of one kind or the other. In the absence of a new grassroots movement that effects a fundamental shift in the political landscape, the imperatives of this Nehru-Gandhi strategic calculus demand that the BJP start looking for a fresh face without any political baggage preferably outside it’s fold to be viable in 2019 if not in 2014. |
