gold gets its value from its rarity. platinum is more valuable because it is even more rare. silver ... iron ... etc all the metals value depends on their availability and cost of extraction/refining

Pomegranate_life:

Where do Diamonds fall in the above mentioned categories?

Don't match up to gold - cos the valuation is never consistent.

A gm of gold is a gm of gold everywhere...

A diamond is valued by the 4Cs- Carat, Color, Cut and Clarity - the value becomes dependent on the handlers and certification agencies.

Also local culture may impact what quality is valued more...:-)

Because people buy it :-)

Because being a noble metal it does not degrade over time and can be hoarded - it makes a safe reserve commodity.

It also allows it to be passed on as inheritance ..so peole hoard it individually too.

And it has been made a status symbol of family riches :-)

All of these reasons drive up demand thus increasing the price.

Gold - unlike other metals doesnt rust. So, its best for ornaments.

In India - Sentiment

Other countries - Its standard for exchanging currency

Personally.....I dont think it has any value. Steel is more valuable according to me :-)
