I was reading an article yesterday about the possible communication breakdown in 2012. In early September in 1859, telegraph wires suddenly shorted out in the United States and Europe, igniting widespread fires. Spark discharges shocked telegraph operators and set the telegraph paper on fire. Even when telegraphers disconnected the batteries powering the lines, induced electric currents in the wires still allowed messages to be transmitted. Colorful aurora, normally visible only in polar regions, were seen as far south as Rome, Hawaii and Cuba. The event was three times more powerful than the strongest space storm in modern memory, one that cut power to an entire Canadian province in 1989. We know that solar flares happen frequently, especially during solar sunspot maximum. Solar Cycle 24, is expected to build gradually, with the number of sunspots and solar storms reaching a maximum by 2011 or 2012. (As NASA claims) Solar Storms can also knock out commercial communications satellites and swamp Global Positioning System signals.. Routine activities such as talking on a cell phone or getting money from an ATM machine could suddenly halt over a large part of the globe,Stock markets collapses . The larger the storm / flare the more damage potential. Hummm … computers control most cars and trucks now and also electricity... Think about it... |
