Days after it filed the chargesheet in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday submitted its maiden status report — which has all the ingredients of triggering yet another round of controversy — to the Supreme Court.

In its report, the CBI — which has so far probed the role of three IPS officers and former Gujarat Minister Amit Shah in the Sohrabuddin case — has indicated the possibility of making more arrests in the coming days. The arrest of some other "high-profile" persons, whose role is under the scanner, is thus not ruled out.

Moreover, the agency's request for shifting the trial outside Gujarat on the assertion that the atmosphere there was not "conducive" for a fair trial has put a question mark on its intentions. For, it's just been five days since the chargesheet was filed.

With the trial process yet to gather steam, it would be interesting to see the CBI’s reasons for doubting the credibility and efficiency of the State judiciary. Since the charge is being levelled by the investigating agency, rather than by the victim or the accused, the haste in demanding the transfer of trial outside Gujarat has raised eyebrows.

The CBI in its bulky status report, filed in a sealed cover, has detailed the investigation made so far even as it has requested the court to grant three more months to complete the probe.

The status report has come in response to the apex court's January 12 order directing the CBI to take up investigation into the matter.

Sohrabuddin, who was killed along with his wife Kausar Bi on the outskirts of Ahmedabad, was accused of plotting Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s assassination. With investigations earlier being handled by a Special Investigation Team headed by former CBI director RK Raghavan, three IPS officers — including then DIG DG Vanzara, Rajkumar Pandyan and Dinesh MN — were arrested.

While SIT concluded that the encounter was faked to attain fame, the theory failed to convince the Supreme Court. With the deceased’s brother and petitioner Rubabuddin claiming a "sinister design" by Modi to orchestrate the killing, a three-judge Bench handed over the probe to the agency.

The CBI suspects that influential politicians and bureaucrats would make all possible efforts to create hurdles in the ongoing investigation. But by asserting itself thus, the CBI has only cast aspersions on its own functioning.

Another interesting aspect of the Sohrabuddin case investigation, referred to in the CBI status report, is the possibility of more arrests. With the interrogation of Amit Shah under way and the move by one of the accused police officers, NK Amin, to turn approver, the CBI has hinted at the possibility of arresting certain high-ranking political leaders in the State.

The agency is also understood to be on the trail for identifying the killers of a third person, Tulsiram Prajapati, who was accompanying Sohrabuddin and his wife on November 26, 2005. This can be gathered from the January 12 SC order which stated, "The facts surrounding his (Prajapati's) death evoke a strong suspicion that a deliberate attempt was made to destroy a human witness."
