If he go to India and come back on previous employer visa(cancelled Visa) but with Original new company approved petition, will that work?

I don't think so . how can one enter the country on a canceled visa . though I-94 and canceled visa shows the validity that is until you are in the country but once if you travel out you must have valid visa to enter.
This is just out of my common sense. it is always good to take the experts suggestion before traveling.

My friend got stamping in his passport based on his previous employer and after that he transferred his visa to other company and got approved H1 with I-94.
Now, previous employer cancelled his H1 visa. He is still safe on new I -797 or need to get H1 stamping on his current employer?
