I kind of both like and mostly hate BGopal. I remember once Krishna vamsi said he could not give an allround hit, a great blockbuster, so far. B Gopal is one such director, either the film will be a dud or a blockbuster, no in between kind. Pratidhwani, Bobbili Raja, Assembly Rowdy, SSR, NN and Indra are all blockbusters, rest duds. He once said in an interview that he can't make films without 10 fights and 6 songs... What I like: When the story works, he is a great director for emotional scenes. The opening scenes of NN, Some from Indra like Shuakat Ali Khan, Train scene of NN--are all great scenes. If you look at these scenes and many others of his routine scenes...e shot ekkada enta varaku avasaramo, elaanti shot ekkada padaalo alaane, kolichi measure chesinattu padatadi, a very rare quality. In his visuals, he has all 3 grounds (front, middle and back) covered very well. If you take Shuakat ali khan scene, for example, you could clearly see his mark. Chiru car vachchi aagadam, oka pedda tilt lo Shuakat ali khan mandee maarblam chuupinchadam, chiru daaggaraku raavadam, conversation ki closeu-ups, konni shots lo background jannaanni cover cheyyadam. Beautiful untadi scene. You may ask, everyone does the same, what's the difference? The way he uses his master shot tilts and rarely using close-ups to register emotion is unique among telugu directors. He always gives full piece of the visual to the viewers. 'Ghallu ghallu mani siri muvvalle' song exemplifies his visual style, the best song from Sirivennela till date. He has a classic style of film making, meaning arranging visuals as per emotion. Though he assisted KRR, starting from Vetagaadu(may be for Adavi raamudu too) through agniparvatham, he has this different style. Old timers like Dasari or KRR or even Kodanda are little behind in this aspect. The 2 others among telugu directors have classical shot division of KV and Guna. Rest of them either make a paavala film (puri) or don't know what they are making. With Yeleti, it's the subject and narrative that takes front seat than the visuals, he has effective visuals but not easthetic visuals. BTW, I still can't beleive VBhaskar assisted BGopal, it goes to show that it doesn't matter who you assist, as long as you make your mark. What I don't like: 1)He goes with rountine subjects, probabbly because he doesn't have any more talent than this. 2)Heroinla jocketlu uudadeesi hero meeda ekkistaadu!!!!!!!!! to cater to baser instincts. 3)Routine songs, routine sets, 100 dancers in the background...VVVinyak off late is doing the same. 4)Prati cinemaalo oka collector, oka lawer, oka SP, oka raajakeeyanaayakudu...ilaa untayyi characters...paruchuri brothers annee cinemaallo ide varasa. 5) Film making is pekaata. With B Gopal, it's a big gamble, producer's life is on line. He is a dump truck director like Rajamouli and YVS. What it means is they shoot everything and anything they think on floor and dump the reels into truck and throw them at the editor. The editor comes up with one version, if they like it, it's OK, otherwise reshoot is in order. This wastes lot of time and money. I heard for Adavi raamudu, the whole film is reshot. These directors don't have clear shot division in their heads when they are shooting. That's why I say VVVinayak is the best in this aspect, afterall producer is god for the film, if you don't have a producer, you ain't have a film. 6) He took 2 crores, but he didn't help even a single penny towards Narasimhudu troubles. I don't think he can comeback. At best, he will churn out another Chandamama or Rakhi, but not another Anthapuram. No matter how strong a person is, financial crisis will pull anyone down and the person will no more act with free will and is constrained. Heedless to other people's advice, he went onto spend 10 crores on Sranjaneyam, which includes Ramya's money. After that he is forced to small films and he lost focus. It can be observed that the earlier sunsual eroticism is replaced by baser vulgarity in his later films, starting from Srianjaneyam. He is down and out... Yes, KV cinemallo gola ekkuva, plays to the gallery. Naa point enti ante, atleast he made a few attempts at some issues, how ever bad the presentation may be. Where as Trivikram, though he is very very talented, will never attempt any issue. You may ask if an artist has to attempt at an issue based theme? Not necessarily, but when someone does attempt, it tells that the artist has some thing to say for real, instead of some timepasable movie like manmadhudu. KV is creative as he can make a film out of an inspiration from a real issue. Ofcourse, there will be lot of masala coating to it. He made Gulabi from Ameena issue, he made Murari from an actual incident happened in Godavari district, where a toddy shop owner killed someone and his familly members died in a mysterious manner. Vadiki hyd turakollu ante kaalindi, khadgam teesaadu. Someone who can make a film out of an issue and channelize the elements into a presentable story, is definitely talented. I am not taking a side here as to whether turakollu should be sent to Pak or beleiving in superstitions as in the case of toddy shop owner, but merely saying they are issues never the less. Again not so creative copies (film in itself may turn out creative considering tollywood standards) are Ninne pelladata from DDlj, Sindhooram from Bandit Queen and Anthapuram from iraq based serial. He should have made Srianjneyam with Bruce Almighty story as it is. He has lost his touch starting with SriAnjaneyam disaster. He doesn't have this 'don't care about others ' attitude anymore and it shows in Rakhi and Chandamama. The problem with him is, he thinks he is more talented than what his films are and thinks he can do more. But the reality is he is successful only with love stories coupled with family dramas. He worked under Gautam Raju and has good editing sense. I think for all practical purposes, he is a gone case now. You can't expect a good, different or creative film from him anymore. Rakhi explains it all. His Anthapuram is best so far, except for the second half where he turned villains into caricatures. On a side note, a writer or editor are better equipped to direct than say a cinematographer and to some extent an actor. Cinematographer-director best example is only Govind Nihalani, worst example is Rasool ellore. Cinema history is full of Writer-directors. On a side note, if I have to pick just one director, among routine commercial directors with loads of talent, it will be VVVinayak. I am a fan since his Aadi. 1) He is not a dump truck director like Rajamouli. He doesn't waste film, goes with fewer takes, knows clearly what shots he wants, shoots quick. 2) With in regular format, he is creative. 3) Has good comedy sense. 4) Has good visual sense, especially those unusual camera angles he uses (remember the interval fight from CKR). Yeleti occupies 1 to 10 in my list of the current directors. KV and Gunasekhar and Sukumar are next level. Kammula doesn't get listed even if I have to list a million directors.
