The U.S. Geological Survey reported a quake of magnitude 6.9 near the Philippines, about 190 kilometres southeast of Taiwan. It was not immediately clear if the quakes were the same. Earthquakes occur frequently in Taiwan, which lies on a seismically active stretch of the Pacific basin. One of Taiwan's worst-recorded quakes occurred in September 1999. Measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale, it killed more than 2,400 people and destroyed or damaged 50,000 buildings. | ||

NO tsunami warning, watch or advisory is in effect for these areas. Based on the earthquake magnitude and historic tsunami records, a damaging tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska coasts. At coastal locations which have experienced strong ground shaking, local tsunamis are possible due to underwater landslides. At 8:00 PM Pacific Daylight Time on April 25, an earthquake with preliminary magnitude 6.5 occurred southeast of Taiwan .
