Telangana or no Telangana, this is one industry that is unlikely to relocate. No, we are not talking of IT, pharma or realty, where the ongoing stir over bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh has prompted many corporates to rethink their presence in Hyderabad… …But of the Rs 6,000-crore-plus domestic seed industry. This question does not even enter the mind of those in the business. Hyderabad is and will remain the Seed Capital of India is the uniform refrain. The advantage No other place offers the kind of locational advantage and environment conducive for both breeding as well as seed production and storage, says Mr K. V. Subba Rao, Country Manager of Pioneer Hi-Bred International, a DuPont subsidiary. Pioneer — a leading player in corn, bajra (pearl millet) and rice hybrids — is not the only one to be based out of Hyderabad. So are Bayer BioScience (formerly Proagro) and a host of domestic breeders from Nuziveedu Seeds, the DCM Shriram Consolidated Ltd-owned Bioseed and JK Agri-Genetics to Vibha Seeds, Kaveri Seeds, Ganga Kaveri Seeds and SeedWorks India Ltd. In addition, Zuari Seeds and Advanta India (part of United Phosphorus), despite being headquartered in Bangalore, are increasingly focusing their research and molecular breeding activity in Hyderabad. These companies — and even Monsanto and Syngenta India — already have seed-processing facilities on the outskirts of the city. So what is so special about Hyderabad? “For seed production, you need two things: Dry weather and moderate temperatures. Hyderabad has both. It is neither humid nor do temperatures dip below 15 degrees Celsius even in winter,” notes Dr Paresh Verma, Director (Research) at Bioseed Research India Pvt Ltd. This is not so in the North, where it is either very hot (in May-June) or very cold (December-February) when it happens to be dry. That makes the region unsuitable for seed production in practically all crops, barring wheat, mustard and chana (gram). And since there are no hybrids in these, the private sector is least interested. Much of seed production in the country — in hybrid rice, corn, bajra, sorghum, cotton, sunflower and even vegetables such as tomato, chilly, okra and brinjal — is concentrated in the Peninsular States of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. And that's where the seed majors, be it Mahyco, Nuziveedu or Rasi Seeds, also come from. “Hyderabad's advantage lies in its being right in the middle of this seed production belt,” adds Dr Verma. If this were not enough, there is also the flexibility to grow two or more crops of rice, sorghum and millets in a year. This option – enabling researchers to test for as many generations as possible – does not exist in the North, where rice is strictly a kharif crop, Mr Rao points out. Low humidity makes Hyderabad a superior option to even Bangalore for storage of seeds. Firms having a niche in vegetable hybrid seeds – Namdhari Seeds, Nunhems India and Indo-American Seeds – mostly work out of Bangalore. But in other crops, it is clearly Advantage Hyderabad.
