Okahyderabadi:None of the 21 persons have been caught in the actual act of smuggling. They were picked up from their homes, offices and when they were doing business in banks. Investigators have seized large number of diamonds from them. But the seized diamonds were all accounted for and none of them were smuggled ones, the relative of a detained person told TNN.

INDIA LO UNNA CHINESE GALLANDARINI TOKKI JAIL LA PADEYYALE. MOTTAM VISA LANI CANCEL CHESI PARA DOBBI NUKALE LOPALIKI Relatives and business associates of the 21 detained Indian diamond traders are finding it difficult to build a legal defense for them because Chinese authorities have provided with very little information. The only piece of paper made available is a notice to the wife of one of the detained persons. The notice said her husband has been arrested under the anti-smuggling law. It gives no other details. Relatives of the other 20 detained persons have not received such notice, according to their friends and business associates, who talked to TNN. On the other hand, the authorities have video-recorded the conversation between Indian embassy officials and the detained persons. This made it difficult for them to hold frank and in-depth exchange of information to develop a suitable defense. It is also not clear how long the police and Shenzhen customs will take to frame charges and begin the due process of law. "We do not know exactly whether they have broken any law," a diamond merchant from India, said. None of the 21 persons have been caught in the actual act of smuggling. They were picked up from their homes, offices and when they were doing business in banks. Investigators have seized large number of diamonds from them. But the seized diamonds were all accounted for and none of them were smuggled ones, the relative of a detained person told TNN. Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said on Thursday that the arrested Indians will be dealt with according to the law. China welcomed Indian companies to do business in India but they must abide by local laws, she said. Officials of the Indian embassy have already met and talked to the detained persons, she said. "We fear the video recording may be used to build up the prosecution case. They might also look for differences within the trading community, which could be used to advantage," he said. A Hong Kong-based law firm has been appointed to represent the detained persons. The firm will send lawyers to talk to the police and Customs authorities in order to find out the reasons why they have been detained. "We chose a Hong Kong firm because it is easy for us to interact with them as compared to lawyers based in Mainland China," a diamond merchant based in Hong Kong told TNN. Relatives of most of the detained persons have flown in from India while local Indian businessmen have also joined hands to help out the detained persons. Vegetarian food has been provided to the detained persons, most of whom are Jain Gujaratis, sources said. |
