http://www.dailypioneer.com/229498/Communists-bow-before-god .html Communists bow before god VR Jayaraj | Kochi Karat says okay for comrades to follow faiths other than Marxism Faced with the grim prospect of mass desertion by comrades opting for god over Marx, CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat has signalled a major shift in his partyâs policy by saying it is not against religion or faith in god but opposed to communalism. âBelief in god and religion is no bar for anyone to join or work in the CPI(M) provided he or she respects the partyâs constitution and programme,â he said days after KS Manoj, a devout Catholic and former MP, resigned from the party rather than accept the ârectificationâ campaign against believers. In an article published in Desabhimani daily, the CPI(M)âs Malayalam mouthpiece, Karat said that the clause on adherence to materialism as laid out in the document on the partyâs rectification programme was meant only for prominent office-bearers and elected members and not for ordinary workers. âThe CPI(M) is an organisation that upholds a materialist perspective. But it does not stop believers from joining or working in the party,â he said. âThe CPI(M) has no difficulty in working with believers and religious leaders in the struggle for the uplift of the working class and the poor,â Karat said in the article, assuring members that the party would not ask the religious-minded to give up their beliefs. Manojâs resignation has resulted in Christians, especially Latin Catholics, in Kerala who are members of the CPI(M) wanting to take the exit route too. This has caused alarm among central leaders who are apprehensive of a similar fallout in West Bengal. The CPI(M) ran into similar trouble three years ago when then West Bengal Transport Minister Subhash Chakraborty rebelled against the party after he was reprimanded for offering puja at Tarapith. âI am a Hindu first and a Brahmin later, and then everything else,â he Chakraborty had retorted, taunting his party leadership. On that occasion, Jyoti Basu and State party secretary Biman Bose had stepped in to defuse the crisis with the former CM making light of the matter, saying, âSubhash has gone mad!â In his signed article which appeared on Thursday, Karat said that in general the rectification programme, finalised by the central committee recently to cleanse the party of corrupt, immoral and bourgeois tendencies among leaders and members, had only said that partymen should stay away from rituals and customs that could lead to discrimination based on caste or social status. At the same time, the programme had a different advice to the prominent members, leaders and elected representatives of the party, he said. âThe CPI(M) does not ask its members to abandon religious belief or practices. But they should adopt a firm stand against practices like untouchability and discrimination against women even if they have religious sanction,â he said in the article. Karatâs explanation of the partyâs position with regard to materialism was meant to prevent en-masse resignation of members and estrangement of supporters, who believe in god and religion, in the wake of last weekâs resignation from the party by Manoj, former Marxist MP from Alappuzha. Manoj, a devout Catholic, quit the party protesting against the stipulations on adherence to atheism in the document of the partyâs rectification programme. Local-level CPI(M) leaders in Alappuzha had reported to the top leadership earlier this week that hundreds of god-fearing Christians were preparing to leave the party rebelling against the condition laid out in the rectification document that Marxists should not organise or attend religious rites and functions. Karatâs direct intervention in the matter came after State secretary Pinarayi Vijayanâs efforts to calm the believers proved counter-productive. Manoj, who was the Alappuzha diocesan president of the Kerala Latin Catholic Association when he was made a CPI(M) candidate for the Lok Sabha election, quit the party saying he could not sacrifice his belief for the sake of Marxist atheism. Pinarayi had last Monday tried to explain that the CPI(M) was not against believers, but this backfired after he criticised Manoj by calling him a half-priest. This had further enraged the Latin Catholic members of the party. Manojâs resignation had caused a serious credibility crisis for the CPI(M) among the believers, especially those from the minority communities as he was the second person from the minorities to be forced to leave the party in less than a year for upholding faith. The immediate reason for the expulsion of AP Abdullakutty, former Marxist MP and presently a Congress MLA, was his act of praising Narendra Modi, but the party was only waiting for such an opportunity as he had already been targeted for his open declaration of faith in god and belief in Islam. |
