how do you make this better? have any ideas you or me going agaisnt it is not going to fix it neither is it a solution what i meant is the current system needs to be entirely replaced with a system more robust and less bureaucratic red tape any kind of paperwork still needs to approved by 10 different offices and 100 different clerks i personally have given up on it that it will ever change since even in 2010 our state's one of the reasons for bifurcation is govt jobs? until our process changes and more accountability and metrics for measuring efficiency and resource optimization comes in with the service providers being paid adequately it wont change and all of that to change rich, middle class and poor divide povaali or atelast a sociological and economic structure where all can atleast afford a decent living like here where everyone get s decent means of transportation( i dont mean a car), roof, clothing and education, a credit system and a social security system when every person is fighting to survive and make his/her or their dependents life better which is the case mostly apart from greed being the other minor factor, i believe our system is working just fine if you want to prove me wrong, create the utopia i just mentioned and then tell the clerk to get the •••• out | ||

yep.....avunu bro..after seeing the opinions of others here, it is outrightly evident that i've been used to bribes all my life.. if i think abt it, there isn't a SINGLE incident where i haven't bribed a govt official..i bribed the police for my passport inquiry, i bribed the DMV in india for my license, i bribed the registrar for my marriage certificate..iam so fcuking used to it..that i take pleasure in tipping ppl to get my things done..i feel at HOME.......nice and easy.. | ||

couldnt agree more with you on how corruption starts bro..it almost always starts with a fault of ours.....but wot abt the meager salaries of most of the govt employees in india? when their salaries dont meet their ends, i think it is only fair to charge guys like Hyder a 'convenience fee' (or a bribe) so it works for either of them.. i dunno my heart always goes out to the employees with scanty incomes..i think it is only fair to TIP them a little to get our job done.. | ||

Ye desamegina Endu kaalidina.. Indian Consulate, NYC Monday, 12:12 PM "Pull over right here please" i said in a hurried tone. Yellow cab came to a halt with screeching noise. I looked at the Taxi meter. It read 62.50 "Plus 8 dollars for toll" driver announced while i was taking out the cash from my wallet. I could only find 20 dollar bills. So i gave 80 bucks to him and said "keep the change" while i lunged outside. After all, he deserved it. He covered jersey city to madison avenue on 64th street in 25 minutes. I ran the stairs and tried to push the huge door open. It didn't open. I tired again. Still no luck. I checked the name on the door "Consulate General of India, New York". I checked my watch. 12:14 PM. Someone shouted from my back "Are you here for Indian consulate?" "Yes" i answered looking at my watch again. "It is located in the basement. Take the stairs from there" he pointed to a narrow stairs which were going down. "Thanks Bro". I ran towards the stairs. I was relieved to see the glass door open. I almost ran inside. Nobody cared to bother. There were 2 rooms.. one on each side. Both the rooms were heavily crowded. I tried to look for the sign "Passport Renewals". But there were none. I scanned the rooms again to give it one more try. Nope not a single sign. But there were huge picture frames all over... all of them read "Incredible India" Finally i saw "him". He was unmistakable. A typical north indian govt clerk in his safari suit, sleeveless sweater and a monkey cap. Relaxed in a chair.. he was half asleep. I rushed to him without thinking twice. "Hello" He nodded his head as if to question "Why are you disturbing my sleep?" "I need to renew my passport. Could you please guide me" He frowned and looked at his watch. "Kal subah 9 bhaje aao" "Kyon?" "Token ab nahi milegaa" "Kyon nahi?" "Time ho gaya naa... 12:15 PM se pehle aana padta hai" I checked my watch again... 12:17 PM. "Sirf 2 minute late bhayya.. bahut traffic tha park avenue ke paas" "To main kya karun?" he replied "Please help me... bahut dur se aa raha hoo" "Tho post me application bhejo. Ek hafte mein miljayegaa" I was loosing my patience. He was almost sleeping when i came in. And he didn't even know what time it was. He still had tokens in his hand. "Kya mein kisi se baat kar sakta hu? manager or someone else" "Ab kuch nahi hogaa" he was merciless. I knew that he was trying to follow THE RULES. But being a typical desi i was still trying to find a way to get in line. I looked around to see if i can find anyone else or managers room to try my luck. There were none. My blackberry buzzed. I had to reply to one important email. When i was about to ask him one final time... One more guy came rushing in through the glass doors. "Where can i get the passport renewal application form?" "Kal subah 9 bhaje aao" i replied smilingly instead of the clerk. He thought i was joking. He repeated the same question again to clerk. And got the same answer. "I came in 5 minutes ago. I couldn't get it" i said with a smile to solace him. "What the heck? It is only 12:20 PM" he almost shouted. Another 5 minutes passed. During that time he requested the clerk at least 10 times... No luck! Meanwhile i was preparing to go back. One beautiful girl walked in along with her mom. More than half the heads in the room turned in one direction.
