Hyderabad, Jan. 5: The Congress decided to play it safe by not spelling out its stance on the Telangana issue at the all-party meeting on Tuesday, according to party sources. The finance minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, summoned party representatives, Mr K.S. Rao, and Mr Uttam Kumar Reddy to his house late Monday night to inform them in the presence of the state in-charge, Mr Veerappa Moily, the PCC chief, Mr D. Srinivas, and the Chief Minster, Mr K. Rosaiah, that as leaders of the party were divided on regional lines, the Congress preferred not to take a stand on Telangana. He said it would be better if representatives confined their statements to the conflicting regional sentiments on Telangana, sources said. The Congress informed the Telugu Desam about its decision. TD president, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, who is having to deal with a similar division in his party, agreed to do the same. According to sources, the TD representatives, Mr Yanamala Ramakrishnudu and Mr Repuri Prakash Reddy, were asked to present their arguments merely based on regional sentiments. This tacit understanding between the two major parties changed the mood of the meeting, which was far less explosive than expected.
