He could speak 17 languages including Urdu, Marathi, Kannada, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Sanskrit and Oriya with a fluency akin to a native speaker. His mother tongue was Telugu. An LTTE-Sonia family link? S. Gurumurthy,Newindpress April 29 2008 The LTTE suicide squad did plan and eliminate Rajiv Gandhi. But, why did the LTTE do it? Was there a larger conspiracy that extended beyond the LTTE as the strike force? Was the LTTE the author of the crime or the mercenary for some one else or for some purpose that yielded some benefit to it? These questions persisted even after the actual assassins were brought to book. The Narasimha Rao government appointed the Jain Commission to go into the conspiracy angle to the murder.In its interim report the commission did exceedingly good work to bring on record evidence about the political forces involved in promoting the LTTE in Tamil Nadu that made the crime possible. Yet it made a mockery of its main work, the conspiracy angle. It floated dubious and wild theories, involving Mossad! CIA! Besides adding confusion, it ended up trivialising a very serious exercise. This also robbed the commission of its credibility. As the commission’s final report proved a flop, the Vajpayee government appointed a Multi- Disciplinary Monitoring Agency (MDMA) in 1998 to unearth the conspiracy angle. But the person who first demanded, but, ultimately made, investigation into the conspiracy to murder Rajiv Gandhi irrelevant was none other than his widow Sonia Gandhi. Her attitude to the investigation and suspected actors in the murder dramatically changed. Her conduct in 1997 when she was working to enter active politics was a stark contrast to her attitude after taking over the congress leadership on the Jain Commission issue. In 1997, she demanded that the DMK which, the Jain commission had said, was part of the conspiracy, be sacked as a partner of the UF alliance and pulled down the government when the demand was not met. Her party insisted the entire facts about the conspiracy be investigated and revealed. Addressing a meeting at Amethi, Sonia hinted that the DMK was a fan of the LTTE and charged that those who doubted the Jain commission report were diverting the attention from the investigation into the conspiracy to murder Rajiv and demanded that the probe be completed expeditiously (Indian Express 2.2.1998). But, once she took over the party leadership, she not only ceased to evince any interest in pursuing the Rajiv Gandhi murder conspiracy, but also began allying with the alleged conspirators themselves. The developments, put together, reveal a shocking picture.The year after taking over the Congress, Sonia Gandhi makes a secret move. In the year 1999, she told then President Dr K R Narayanan privately that ‘neither she nor her son and daughter wanted any of the four convicts’ sentenced to death for Rajiv’s assassination ‘to be hanged’, and pleaded that no child should be orphaned by an act of the State. Noted the Indian Express (Nov 20, 1999) that before her plea for mercy to the Rajiv killers the Congress party was the leading opponent of mercy to them. This silenced the party once and for all. What transpired at her private meeting with the President was revealed not by Sonia, but by Mohini Giri (the former chairperson of the National Women’s Commission) and on that basis Nalini’s death sentence was commuted to life. (Frontline Nov 5-18, 2005). Then, in February 2004, there were reports, editorially commented by the Island newspaper in Colombo on Feb 20, 2004, that Eduardo Faleiro, her emissary, had a secret meeting with the LTTE chief Prabhakaran at Killinochi. Island had also referred to reports that Sonia’s mother Ms Paula Maino had met Anton Balasingham, LTTE’s point man in London, in connection with the electoral alliance between the DMK and the Congress. While Eduardo Faleiro at least made a feeble attempt to deny the meeting, Paulo Maino would not even deny that.Third, the Paulo Maino meeting preceded, and the Faleiro meeting succeeded, the unbelievable U-turn of Sonia Gandhi to forge alliance with the DMK which was accused by her own party in 1997 of being part of the conspiracy to murder her husband. The DMK-Congress alliance seems to have been agreed upon sometime in December 2003. In January 2004, Sonia met the DMK chief and concretised the alliance. The coming together of one of the alleged conspirators and the victim of the conspiracy made a mockery of any further investigation into Rajiv Gandhi murder. For the last four years there is not a single word spoken by Sonia on pursuing the Rajiv Gandhi murderers and on unearthing the conspiracy or for the extradition of Prabhakaran or Pottu Amman. This is despite the fact that, when, on April 10, 2002, Prabhakaran met the press at Killinochi, he did not even deny that LTTE was involved in Rajiv assassination. Fourth, the LTTE too responded favourably to signals from Sonia that she was not against LTTE. On January 27, 2006, Anton Balasingham, told an Indian TV news channel that the Rajiv killing was ‘monumental tragedy’ and asked the people of India to be ‘magnanimous to put the past behind’ and deal with the LTTE. Fifth, Sonia did not object to the inclusion of the DMK woman MP in whose house Sivarasan the main killer of Rajiv Gandhi had stayed for which she was detained under the TADA, as a minister in the UPA government. Sixth, the MDMA which was appointed by the NDA government after Sonia rejected the Action Taken Report on the Jain Commission, has virtually become defunct under the UPA regime. Since 2004, she has not uttered a single word asking what the MDMA is doing. And finally now in March 2008, Priyanka Vadra, Sonia’s daughter makes a secret visit to Vellore jail and meets the first accused in the murder of Rajiv, for over an hour. Media reports say that they sat by each other’s side, cried and professed goodwill towards each other! No one knows what transpired between them. The meeting clearly illegal, looks almost a conspiracy, would have remained a secret had the media not exposed it. Priyanka said that neither Sonia nor Rahul or Priyanka believe in hate or anger, and that the visit was her way of coming to terms with the Rajiv Gandhi murder. Moral high ground seems to be a cover for undisclosed political strategies. But where was this high moral ground when Sonia angrily pulled down the UF government on the ground that DMK, a suspected co-conspirator with LTTE, was part of the alliance? Is Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination a personal affair between the Sonia Gandhi family and the LTTE for the former to punish or pardon the latter? LTTE has neither confessed nor regretted its action for the Gandhis to pardon. The LTTE is even today unrepenting. The prosecution case is that the LTTE supremo decided to avenge Rajiv Gandhi for sending IPKF to Sri Lanka and betraying the LTTE. But that was no personal decision of Rajiv Gandhi. The assassination was an act against the state of India. This is how it should be seen and pursued. Neither Sonia nor Priyanka nor the Congress has the right to pardon the criminals who have challenged the sovereignty of India. QED: Sonia Gandhi family and the LTTE connection is mysterious. I used to have so much respect for PVNR . When we were in school he was like a super hero with all the progress desham doing under him. I always used to have a cynical look into politicians. They do something good but they also have a dark secrets about them. But thought PV was beyond that. Till i read the jain commission report. Then found out he joins the bandwagon. Politics n politicians are fcked up. U cant see them in black n white then u hate everyone | ||

There is only one thing to add from my side, lastly, since the day he took over in 1991 to this day, he is ruling India through his policies, may be from the heavens. All the next PMs had to do was look to PVNR as guiding light in times of crisis and his work continues to be the source that is showing the way in one way or other till today. PVNR might not be a man from RSS or the right wing. But he certainly got lots of respect from the right wing and for the first time in independent India, he showed that there could be a non-hypocrite PM from Congress at the helm. When crores of people rallied to see a disputed structure he allowed it and contributed in his small way to let the historical correction get started albeit in a small way ! For millions of people like me, when he opened the economy with conviction, he provided us a livelihood for the rest of the lives. He shaped the foriegn policy of the day which is far more efficient than his predecessors who were jay-walking like blind leading blind !

It's almost as if P V Narasimha Rao never existed, as if the most difficult years in India's [ Images ] recent history were being managed by the invisible hands of Indira and Rajiv Gandhi [ Images ]. The credit for economic reforms all goes to Rajiv Gandhi while the blame for Ayodhya is reserved for Rao. This was Sonia Gandhi's [ Images ] version of India's recent history during the 125th Foundation Day ceremony of the Indian National Congress. She enumerated the achievements of every Congress prime minister since independence but erased Rao and his contributions from her narrative. Renouncing one of its most successful Prime Ministers at the altar of expediency and defending Atal Bihari Vajpayee's [ Images ] 'secular' credentials is a feat only the Grand Old Party of India is capable of accomplishing. The Liberhan Commission report by exonerating Narasimha Rao and censuring Vajpayee had put the Congress in a quandary. After all the meta-narrative of the post-Rao years has been that the demolition of Babri Masjid [ Images ] on December 6, 1998 was Rao's fault. For this Rao was not merely punished but humiliated. Even in his death he remained a persona non grata with even his body not being allowed to be taken inside the All India Congress Committee building. The debate in Parliament on the Liberhan report made it amply clear that the focus of Congress' defence will remain on Rao. The home minister declaimed that the Rao government "made a wrong political judgment" and Rao "paid the price for this." The Union Minister for Minority Affairs Salman Khursheed [ Images ] admitted that the Congress has "erred" but underlined that "hamare paanv khisak gaye the till fortunately Sonia Gandhi took over and saved usÂ…" After all, Rahul Gandhi [ Images ] had made it clear long time back that has a member of Nehru-Gandhi family been in power, the demolition would not have taken place. It is not difficult to decipher why Congress has over the years created this myth that Rao was a closet RSS-wallah. This allowed the Congress to absolve its rank and file of all the blame and make Rao a convenient scapegoat. It is neatly forgotten that it was Rajiv Gandhi's government that opened the locks and performed shilanyas at the disputed site. Clearly as Prime Minister Rao failed in his duty to protect the disputed structure in Ayodhya. But his failure was also the failure of the entire top brass of the Congress who were part of the government and decision-making process. And it's a failure of the age-old Congress policy of using religion for political mobilisation. To blame Rao for Ayodhya fiasco, therefore, is not only dishonest but also disgraceful. More importantly, Rao's failure cannot be an excurse to deprive him of all the credit that is his due as the nation's prime minister at one of the most difficult times in India's contemporary history. Early 1990s was a time when a succession of weak governments had left India rudderless, economically, politically and strategically. The world was changing rapidly and the Indian economy was collapsing. India was facing a million mutinies and there was no one of national stature to stem the tide. The Mandal-mandir discourse was threatening to unravel India. It was at such a juncture that Rao assumed power. He had scant support from the senior party leadership of his own party, all of whom had their own aspirations to become the prime minister. Despite the caricature of Rao being indecisive, he was one of the most decisive leaders this nation has seen. On all crucial issues, he took decisions that have continued to shape India's rise over the last two decades. Manmohan Singh [ Images ] is touted as the father of Indian economic reforms but as Singh has himself acknowledged it was Rao was fathered the process. Singh was an economic technocrat with little understanding of the political constraints. It was Rao who shielded Singh from the Left of his own party who had left no stone unturned in opposing the economic liberalisation programme. Rao deftly navigated the political waters at a time when his own party was out to scuttle his most ambitions undertaking and made economic reforms politically tenable. How ironical then that today the same Congress party functionaries shout from the rooftops trying to take credit for India's economic success without acknowledging the role of Rao who envisioned and executed the process? The other major challenge that India faced in the early 1990s was on the foreign policy front. The world had suddenly become unipolar with India's main ally, the Soviet Union, virtually disappearing from the world map. Recognising that India would need the support of the West and especially the US if the economic reforms were to succeed, Rao laid the foundations for a revival of US-India ties acknowledging the importance of the US in the global strategic architecture. But he was clear that India needed other major powers as well and so his attempts to manage ties with China and Russia [ Images ] even at a time when Russia was widely viewed as a power on an irreversible downward spiral. In West Asia, Rao had the courage that no other Indian leader had. He established full diplomatic ties with Israel in 1992 even as he reached out to Iran, paying a landmark visit to Tehran in 1993 becoming the first Indian prime minister to visit Iran since 1979. Rao was also the initiator of India's 'Look East' Policy. He understood early on that the centre of gravity of global economics was shifting to the East and India's economic future needed to be linked to the booming economies in East Asia. He expanded India's engagements with the ASEAN not only as a matter of India's economic revival but also as a counterweight to the rising Chinese dominance. On the internal security front, the Punjab [ Images ] situation improved markedly under Rao and the Indian security forces got a handle on Kashmir [ Images ] insurgency even as he was instrumental in reviving the state's political process. For all this, Rao has only received contempt from his party colleagues. Being one of the most successful Indian prime ministers from a non-Nehru-Gandhi dynasty is not something that Congress-wallahs can accept easily. In their deference to the Dynasty, they have vilified Rao, a sagacious and wily leader who led this nation like few others. Hopefully, history will restore him to a place that he truly deserves -- as one of the most remarkable prime ministers of modern India. |
