Up in the air basically is a character study of a consultant(clooney) who is hired by organizations to break the news to their employees that they got fired.They do so because they dont have the balls to do it by themselves cause they r not tough enough to deal with the out lash of the raging employees.Rather than just letting the employees know that their services are no longer required clooney also has to help them cope up with the shock n stress the news showers up on them.He has to do it face to face lookin into their eyes day after day.Sometimes even facing the wrath of the agitated employees but cleverly choosing the right words to address their desperate questions he takes control of the situation and ends the process with as much less drama as possible.In this process we come to know what actually losing a Job means to so many people.The stress that generates from a news of someones getting fired is almost comparable to the stress of a person who had a death in the family.But from clooney characters POV the more the number of layoffs the better for the business.Basically clooney is like an undertaker.The more the deaths the better for business. So the moment he is introduced the character grasps ur attention rightaway and u start to wonder wat kind of a living is that. The other aspect of narration focuses on clooneys lifestyle. He is a consultant and he travels almost everyday. Lives out of suitcases.Drives Rental Cars and prefers to spend Xmas in a hilton hotel than in his house.He travels 350thousand miles an year and we are told moon is only 250thousand miles from earth. He is very keen to add as many miles as he can to his frequent flier account and his aim is to reach the magic number of 10million miles. SO far only 6 people made it to that number on our planet and he will be the 7th person to reach that num if he succeeds.And we are told there more people who ventured into moon n space than the num of people who reahced the 10 million miles taget in air.And if you reach that target every times you check into a plane the captain would come n wish you personally n thank you for flying with them. If you are stuck in the traffic then they will hold the flight even for hours till u make to the plane.They would even write ur name on the flight so we r told. The other aspect of his personality is he lives for himself. He doesnt believe in marriage and thinks the concept of love and family is overrated. He prefers to celebrate Xmas on a plane or in a hotel away from everyone and gets extremely annoyed whenever he is called to his base.The writer cleverly introduces the character of a natalie keener here. A 23 year old graduate , a new recruit in clooneys firm with full of promise and clooney is given the responsibility to nurture her and teach her the trade secrets. So she becomes his companion on his trips.She is the medium through which the audience can communicate with clooney. She would ask all the questions to him that the audience are curious about.About his lifestyle,his priorities,his ethics,his future and in this process we are treated to one of the funniest conversations on a movie screen in recent times. Simply hilarious anthey. Especially when she freaks out about clooneys obsession with that 10million mile target.The encounter between a naive 23 year old dreamy eyed n emotional girl with a wise n older n extremely practical man. instant classic. Then there is another important character of vera farmiga. Another frequent flier with whom clooney develops a relation. From what starts as a casual fling at the hotel bar starts to develop into something promising n longterm.Wether she is going to challenge his priorities and divert him from his lifestyle into someone craving for a co plilot in his journey is for you to fugure out... And by focussing on the character of clooney we are also educated about how horribly the economy has effected the employees. Most of the reactions from employees are so real and makes you think how important it is to constantly enhance ur skills and not taking for granted any position in a firm no matter how long u have been serving them.some reactions of the employees when they come to know that they are no longer required are very touchy.But the most gloomy phase of the economy is addressed with a touch of humor n coated with sugar so that u wont feel uneasy to sit through the proceedings and makes it a compulsory watch for everyone. DO NOT MISS THIS MOVIE FOR ANYTHING....especially frequent fliers.... |
