yes, all 7 days on BI. I can't comment on Maui. I assume Maui is more tropical weather? Next time velthey beaches ekkuva ga unna island ki koddiga thakkuva preference isthaanu. But more tropical means more rainfall |

Day 1 -- After 12 hrs of journey from NY, we arrived at the resort close to midnight on Friday. So, we decided to take it easy on Saturday. So, checked out the resort and the facilities. Next, we went to the farmer's market, tasted different kind of fruit like rombutan, star fruit etc and bought some fruits for the week :-). After that, we went to the small beach on Alii drive. The beach was good, and had some excellent views. We stayed there till sunset. The view was awesome from there :-). After that, we went to the Sheraton to get a glimpse of the Manta Ray, but they did not show up that day. Day 2 -- We started early that morning to go The Place of Refuge. On the way, we stopped at the Kona Coffee shop, tasted the different types of coffee. The view from their shop was awesome!!! The clouds were hanging so low, man it was AWESOME!!! The entire drive to the place was excellent! On to the Place of Refuge. AWESOME!!! The entire place was so scenic, with all the coconut trees, the blue waters, the history of that place, Excellent! We saw some turtles, fish hangin out at the bay. Took tons of pictures :-) Stayed there for around 3-4hrs to take in all the beauty of the place. DO NOT MISS this place. After that we went to Two Step, saw quite a few people snorkeling, having BBQ. Next we went to Thai Rin on Alii drive for lunch. Food was excellent! That night we tried again to get a glimpse of the Manta Ray, but they did not show up that day too. Day 3 -- That morning we went to Island Lava Java for breakfast. As someone here said, their Cinnamon roll was excellent. Then we headed out to see North Kohala. On the way, the Big Island Revealed book suggested to take Kaloko Road on Rte 190. This entire road and the end of the road is simply GORGEOUS!!! It was a bit cloudy and the scene was BEAUTIFUL! Please visit this place on your trip. we could see the Mauna Kea mountain with the observatories/telescopes atop. It's amazing to see the varied landscape of the island just 100mi apart. We stopped at the Parker Ranch shopping area to get some lunch. Next we headed out for North Kohala, but unfortunately went in another direction which was taking us towards Hilo. We were almost 40 miles away from Hilo before we realised that we were lost. But it wasn't too bad, except for the fact that we lost 1-2hrs. That road to Hilo was simply GORGEOUS!!!. We were going right through the clouds for a while. Beautiful drive. Must visit i would say Once we got back on the right direction, the drive to North Kohala on the Kohala Mountain rd was awesome. Some part of the drive was spectacular. We got to the Hawii town, had some excellent ice cream there at the Tropical "something". It was getting a bit late, and I was having second thoughts to go forward to the Pololu valley. I am so glad we decided to go. Pololu valley was simply STUNNING!!! It was like paradise. It felt as if we were seeing the remote island that was shown in the new King Kong movie. Simply STUNNING view. DO NOT MISS this place at any cost!!! Unfortunately, it was cloudy and raining a bit, so we could not make it all the way down to the green sand beach as the trail was pretty slippery. This is really one of the HIGHLIGHTs of our trip. On our way down back to Kona, the sunset view enroute was STUNNING!!! Blue, Orange shades on the ocean was SPECTACULAR!!! That night too we tried to get a glimpse of the Manta Ray, in vain. Day 4 -- This was a snorkel day. I booked through Fairwinds and the trip was SPLENDID!!! The entire crew was cool and helpful. On our way to kealekekua bay, we saw the bottle nosed dolphins following the boat for a while I got to see tons of fish. Took some nice pictures too. Their breakfast and lunch was EXCELLENT! After the snorkel trip, we headed out to check out the beaches at Mauna Kea, Hapuna, A-Bay. While going through the book, we decided to checkout Makalawena beach on the way cuz of the description even though it said we had to walk 20 minutes to get to it. Well, this turned out to be pretty exhausting for us. We had to walk for 30 minutes in the hot sun (one way) after a very very rocky drive to the parking area. The beach was very secluded and beautiful. This diversion "cost" us 2-3 hrs. Then, we got some late lunch at subway and headed out to the A-Bay beach to catch the sunset from the fresh water pond behind the beach. The entire setting as GORGEOUS!!! But, there was haze at sunset, so couldn't get the proper "photographic" sunset . You've got to visit this place at sunset. Later, we visited the Queen's market place, did some shopping, some starbucks and headed back to the resort. Day 5 -- We got up late due to previous day's gruelling trekking to the Makalawena beach. We made reservations at the My Island B&B inn to spend a night to cover Hilo attractions. On our way to Hilo, we stopped at Coffee Shack in Kona for breakfast. The view from their porch is simply superb!!! Food was delicious. We packed sandwiches for lunch too We stopped at South Point (southern most point in the Island and US), which was a very windy place. All the trees here were bent to one side because of the wind. As you can imagine, there were farms of a different kind -- windmill farms. Again, this place is so beautiful with the contrasting backgrounds. Next we stopped at the Black Sand Beach at mile marker 56. This beach too was gorgeous with a fresh water pond next to the beach. Then, we headed straight to the Volcano Visitor Center who said the Madame Pele was a bit active that day, and that the air was not that clean. They suggested us to visit the Volcano House and the Thurston Lava Tube so that we can spend some time before JAggar Museum was open again. The view from Volcano house was great!!! And seeing an active Volcano? AWESOME!!! Luckily Jaggar museum was opened immediately, so on our way there, we stopped at the steam Vents (got some free steam bath ;-) ), the sulphur banks. The view from Jaggar museum was AMAZING!!! The entire place got cloudy cuz of the activity from the Volcano. It was so cool to see the lava fields as well. Then we went to the Thurston Lava Tube (it was getting dark). We didn't go to the untamed part as it was getting a lil spooky . Then we headed out to see the lava flow near the end of the road on route 130? We got to see the lava flow from a distance. It was AWESOME!!! Wish we had come there earlier during daytime and if we could get a bit closer to the flow that would have been great, but anyway we got to see the flow . The sky from this view point was awesome!! Lots of stars/constellations. The entire Volcano area is one of the HIGHLIGHTS of the trip. That night we had dinner at Subway and headed to the My Island B&B. Day 6 -- Our host made some delicious breakfast, mostly homemade. The place actually looks like a rainforest. We couldn't get proper sleep as it was very chilly due to all the trees, I guess. After having our breakfast, we went to the Rainbow Falls. The place was beautiful. We could see lil rainbows at the falls. After that, we stopped at the Boiling Pots and Pe'epe'Falls. We liked this falls a lot more than the rainbow falls. We hiked down to the bottom and got a nice view of the falls. There was another falls, Wai'ale falls on the same road which was beautiful too! We had lunch at Cafe Pesto. Food was very good here. Next we headed out to Akaka falls state park. I should say that this is one of THE BEST PLACES on the Big Island. Superb falls, superb location. Simply SPECTACULAR!!! We did not want to leave that place actually MUST SEE attraction this one. Next, we stopped the World Botanical Gardens to checkout the UmaUma Falls. This falls is FANTASTIC!!! MUST SEE attraction. It was getting dark by then, so we started our drive back to Kona through the same route as we got lost on Day 3. Again, very scenic route. We made a final attempt to catch the Manta Rays. Looks like they were on a strike Day 7 -- This was the day of our return flight. So we just took it easy. We went to the Hapuna Beach, which was good. Then we went to the Queen's Marketplace to get some coffee. After that we went to see the petroglyphs. It was good to see how the ancient Hawaiians communicated about boundaries . After that, we went to get some souveneirs and headed back to the airport. Now, I understand why people say 1 week is not enough time to visit I would also highly recommend anyone planning to visit the island to get a copy of "The Big Island Revealed" by Andrew Doughty. It is highly informative and laid out in a planned way. |
