Now, Ajit Singh wants Harit Pradesh

Telangana seems to have opened a Pandora’s box with more political leader and regions now set to revive their demand for a separate state.

First off the blocks has been Rashtriya Lok Dal President Ajit Singh who on Thursday threatened to launch an agitation if the demand for a separate Harit Pradesh carved out of western Uttar Pradesh is not met.

"People have agreed to the need for Harit Pradesh and Rahul Gandhi has also agreed. We are waiting for action by the Centre and if they do not take any steps then we will begin our agitation," Singh said in New Delhi.

Singh is not the only one to demand a separate state with the Union Home Ministry having received at least nine requests for creation of states.

West Bengal has for long faced a demand for separate statehood from the Gorkhas for the state of Gorkhaland. In Maharashtra there has been a demand for separate statehood for Vidarbha while Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh which lost territory to Uttaranchal and Chhattisgarh earlier, now face a demand for a separate state of Bundelkhand.

The demand for creation of Bundelkhand state, comprising districts like Banda, Chitrakoot, Jhansi, Lalitpur, Sagar of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh have been pending for long with the ministry, a Home Ministry official said.

A demand for creation of Bhojpur state comprising areas of Eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar has also been received by the Home Ministry. Some local groups have also been demanding the creation of Mithilanchal state out of Bihar.

Another demand for creation of a new state comprising Saurastha region of Gujarat, one of the most prosperous states in the country, has also been pending with the Ministry.

Some other demand include a new Greater Cooch Behar state out of parts of West Bengal and Assam, a Vidarbha state in Maharashtra and a state for the Coorg region of Karnataka.

The Centre on Wednesday night decided to initiate the process for carving out Telangana state comprising 10 districts in Northern Andhra Pradesh.

The Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) announced an indefinite hunger strike for a separate Gorkhaland state on Thursday, a day after the Central Government conceded the demand for Telangana to be carved out of Andhra Pradesh.

The hunger strike for a Gorkhaland state to be carved out of some northern parts of West Bengal would be held in Darjeeling district's three hill subdivisions and the plains of Siliguri.

"Twenty-one youth activists will be on indefinite hunger strike in Darjeeling, Kurseong and Kalimpong and Siliguri till we get Gorkhaland," GJM general secretary Roshan Giri told IANS.

Giri also announced a four-day shutdown in the area from December 14-17.

Besides, the GJM activists will take out massive rallies in the hills from Thursday, he said.

Home Minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday night gave the green signal for a separate Telangana state, following widespread protests in Andhra Pradesh and the deteriorating health condition of Telangana Rashtra Samiti chief K Chandrasekhar Rao who had been on a fast-unto-death for 11 days.
