Acting on a secret information, CBI raided the premises of a State Govt. emporium at Baba Kharak Singh Marg, New Delhi and recovered 3 (three) 'Shahtoosh Shawls'. Such shawls are manufactured by using the wool of Tibetan Antelope, a rare animal, commonly known as 'Chiru'. The Tibetan Antelope is a scheduled animal and use of its wool is an offence under the provisions of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. Such shawls provide warmth even in extreme cold and cost of such shawls in the Indian markets, ranges from US $ 3000 to 5000. These shawls were recovered from the possession of a Manager of the emporium. Consequent upon the recovery, he was arrested. The accused was proclaimed in the Designated Court and remanded to judicial custody. Further investigation is in progress to ascertain the networking of this illegal trade During the last few years, the CBI has made number of seizures of Shahtoosh Shawls from various business & residential premises, mostly in Delhi.
