enduku MB cinema lo caste feeling disco chestunnaro nakartham kaaledu. NTR may be hero at that time but looks like ANR is still baccha. MB story idea is ghatotkacha and donned by SVR a marvellous character and direction. But at the same time it was marked as first caste bashing ever made on Telugu screen but not the caste feeling you guys are talking about. Mayabazaar is definitely a master piece simply dominated by SVR and Savitri. This movie is a classic example of how an exotic epic could be blend into ones own. Entire episode was not related to Andhra at all, even then the director conveniently made the movie so naturally that people who watch that movie feel as though it belonged to ancient Telugu culture. The spoken language used is typical of Krishna-Guntur style. Dhuryodhana never had tasted "Gongura" in his life. Despite having stars like NTR and ANR, SVR and Savitri outperformed them. Thinking of this, there is one more masterpiece, Nartanashala, where again SVR just dominates the show and also won International award the only Indian to get that award until Kamal Hasan got for VirumanDi. ennani cheppali annai ee movie gurinchi. Maya Bazar which celebrates its 50 years of success today still remains and will remain as a masterpiece in the history of Telugu cinema. Lets see the various aspects of this âMahaâ Movie. Story : The story begins with a celebration to young Sasirekha (Savitri), daughter of Balarama(Gummadi) and Revathi(Chaya Devi). In course of time Balarama promises his sister, Arjunaâs wife, Subhadra (Rushyendra Mani) to get his daughter Sasi Rekha to her son, Abhimanyu (Nageswara Rao). Sathyaki (Nagabhushanam) who attends the Rajasooya Yaaga performed by Yudhishtira comes and explains the highlights with metaphors to his brothers. Lord Krishna(NTR) hands over a magic box âSatya peethamâ presented by Dharma raju to Balarama that was inherited to âPandavaasâ from Harischandra. Then Krishna gives âPriyadarsiniâ, a box which is like a foreseer of oneâs likes. In this scene, Sakuni(CSR Anjaneyulu) will be seen in the box provoking for gambling. Duryodhana who gets humiliated by âPaandavaasâ in Maya Sabha during the Raajasooya Yaaga will be obsessed by Sakuni to provoke âPaandavaasâ for a gamble. Yudhishtira gets defeated in the gamble. Sakuni plans for a marriage alliance of Lakshmana Kumara (Relangi), Duryodanaâs son with Sasirekha to topple Abhimanyuâs wish of marrying Sasirekha. Disheartened by Balaramaâs decision, Subhadra along with Abhimanyu goes away. Krishna who also supported Subhadra finally sends her to Ghatotkacha (SV Ranga Rao), son of Bheema. Ghatotkacha who gives them shelter helps Abhimanyu in marrying Sasi Rekha through his magical feats. Lord Krishna blesses Ghatotkacha to gull âKauravasâ and perform the marriage of Sasirekha with Abhimanyu. The Theme : The main idea was to bring out an episode from the great epic âMahabharataâ and put in the form of a cinema. As it is an extract, it creates a real picture of the mythological characters in the minds of the audience. It not only brought out the characters but also related them to the audience in the language, characterization etc. The film therefore is a form of entertainment as well can be treated as a reservoir of many film techniques. Characters : Steps were taken to see that the characters seem natural and real to life. While the molding of the characters is commendable, the extent to which the actors put in their best is highly appreciated. The allotment of the characters in these movies seems very apt that somebody else in that role might not have done justice to it. Savitri as âSasi Rekhaâ, CSR as âSakuniâ, NTR as âKrishnaâ, and SV Ranga Rao as âGhatotkachaâ have made their roles synonymous with their names. The character of Revathi is portrayed keeping in mind the greedy attitudes of women and the sarcastic criticism that they exhibit public. Especially the character of Sakuni by Mr. CSR is highly commendable. It is not an exaggeration if it is said that even now when people think about Sakuni, it is only CSR who strikes their mind. Acting : While character setting is one part of the game, playing the role is the most crucial and the toughest part of the game. Even though the director may think of the character to be in a particular way, it is very difficult for the actors to get into the shoes of the director and think like him and act accordingly. This is one movie which is the best example for such a situation. The director just didnât finish his job by making the actors act, he in fact made them behave as if they were really the characters themselves. Some of the highlights were: SAVITRI as Sasi Rekha and a mythical form of Ghatotklacha: The director here portrays the character of Sasirekha as a very mild, yet playful, sensitive princess. On the other hand, he shows the transitions of Ghatotkacha into Sasi Rekha where she exhibits the strengths, mannerisms of Ghatotkacha. The sudden shifts in the character are excellently done by Savitri. CSR ANJANEYULU as Sakuni: People must have studied that there was a bad character in the epics called âSakuniâ who always created disturbances. But after seeing âMaya bazaarâ they have clearly understood in fact came to a conclusion that âthis is Sakuni. Such was the impact of CSRâs role of Sakuni in the movie. His character in one way shows the true meaning of villainy that is blended with sarcasm and a tricky way of talking. People have even a fixed idea that Sakuni has such a voice and that Sakuni often rubs the dice in his hands. His voice is like an added asset to sarcastic villainy. Also his artistic way of reciting the poems makes it easy for the audience to make sense of it and his tonal quality is an added attraction. Script and Dialogue: The story which is an extract has been put in a simple way that can be related to the audience. The script has been designed very systematically. The script seems to be well organized with continuity of sequences without disturbing the audienceâs moods. As sources say, the script for this move has been written in such a way that it gives a clear cut description each and every minute concept like lighting, number of lights to be used, expressions of the artists while dialogue delivery, expression of the other characters, what shades of lights to be usedâ¦. This is clear evidence which can be treated as another factor in the development of the movie. Dialogues by Pingali Nagendra Rao are an added attraction to the movie. A tinge of innocence, a tinge of sarcasm, a tinge of pride, a tinge of humour, a tinge of everything blended with the expression are the dialoughes of Pingali. Though the dialougues were written 50 years back, the slang that is used I quite common these days. Especially some words are now used by the people even without their knowledge. The words like âTasmadeeyuluâ, âGonguraâ as âSakhambari Devi Prasadamâ are only possible for Pingali. Direction : KV Reddy has proved clearly that Director is the ultimate man responsible for the movie. The direction played a key role that even today Maya bazaar is synonymous with KV Reddy and vice versa. The directorâs point of thinking and imagination Can be termed as one of the key factors in the success of this film. The directorâs previous movie âPathala Bhairaviâ can be told as a fore runner for the success of âMaya Bazarâ. The conceptualization that must have been done by KV Reddy is one of the prime factors in still remembering the movie after 50 years. Also, KV Reddy seems to have not compromised anywhere at his imagination as well as putting it in reality. It is not an exaggeration to say that the imagination of KV Reddi is the output of Maya Bazar with some added inputs. The âTen Commandmentsâ by Cecil B De Mille is what âMaya Bazarâ by KV Reddy is. It is after this movie that KV Reddy has been credited âThe Cecil B De Mille of Telugu cinemaâ. This single evidence is even not enough to credit the toil and sweat that Mr. KV Reddy has put in. Camera, Photography: Camera and Photography by Marcus Bartley is an outstanding aspect not only for this movie, but for the whole of Telugu cinema. The sequences of events were shot so precisely that it creates no confusion in the audience. The Marcus Bartleyâs skill can be understood in the introduction of the characters of Bala Rama and Krishna where the similarity of brothers is created by focusing on their nose which is quite similar. This kind of idea might be possible only for KV Reddy and Marcus Bartley. Also the introduction of Savitri in the waves of water still remains surprising as to how he did it with the technology available in those days. Camera tries to bring out the shots in different angles and with a different concept. Marcus Bartley indeed is one of the key factors for this film to become a masterpiece. Marcus Bartley can indeed be given the credit of acting as an eye of Mr. KV Reddy. It is in fact a true fact that Marcus Bartleyâs use of camera can even now be taken as an example. Lighting: Lighting in this movie has played a different role. With very little technology in those times, the output given is highly commendable. Mostly even though the lighting is natural, the artificial lighting enhanced the mood and feel of particular scenes. The skill of lighting comes out in the song, âLahiri Lahiri Lahiriloâ which is shot in the mid noon creating an effect of a moonlight boat ride. Here the sunlight was used to create an effect of twilight. This it is a clear cut evidence of the imagination of the camera man and the director. Also, lighting was used sharply to give the feel of characters. For instance, the character of CSR Anjaneyulu (Sakuni) was highlighted at a point with the use of lighting. Here on and off of lighting added to create the feel of villainy in the particular character. Though the lighting included both natural and artificial, their contribution to the scenes has been fulfilled. Scenery : The sets create ambience and give the audience a feel of the surrounding of a scene, thereby helping them to relate themselves. Though the times then demanded them for sets, the natural scenic beauty also enhanced the mood. The location for the song âLahiri Lahiri loâ was a lake near Chennai in which a night effect is created in the mid noon. Also the sets that were created for the various shots show their closeness to reality. Also as sources say, the kingdom or the set of Ghatotkacha is almost a replica of Chitrakut (Ghatotkachaâs place) in Madhya Pradesh. All the credit goes to Madhavapeddi Gokhale and Kaladhar who have worked to get out a natural scene of everything. Sound and Silence: The audio is very clear and audible. Even minute sounds were given importance and silence was very rarely used in the movie. The director has seen that the audience does not get disturbed by the distortions of too much sound. Sound effects also were used like thunders, trumpets etc. A special sound was given for every entry of Sakuni to create the feel. Also, at places it starts before the scene thereby preparing them for it. Music and Songs : Music was given by another âMaster of Musicâ, Ghantasala. The background music is continuous in the movie. Even though it is stereo typed at certain points, it does not create any kind of monotony. The instrument Hemund which was especially imported from Germany was played by Master Venu, K.Bhanu Chanderâs father. This instrument was used only twice, once in âPathala Bhairaviâ and then in âMaya Bazarâ. The composition of songs was made in such a way that Ghantasala must have fore seen that the songs would be remembered for the rest of the Telugu cinemaâs existence. That was the impact of the songs. âLaahiri laahiri laahiri lo â; âNeevenaa nanu thalachinadeeâ; âChoopulu kalasina subha velaâ and âNee kosame ney jeevinchunadeeâ were originally composed by S. Rajeswara Rao. However, Ghantasala conducted orchestrization for these songs and Rajeswara Raoâs name is nowhere seen. It is not an exaggeration to say these songs still go around in peopleâs minds every now and then. The songs like âAha na pellantaâ, âViaha Bhojanambuâ are the all time favorites. Editing and Rhythm of the Movie: While shooting of the movie is one side of the coin, editing and putting in a more presentable form is another side of it. The transitions of the shots even though begin with a lot of dissolving shots later takes off using all different kind of shots. Especially the wipes and fade in fade outs add more feel in the audience. Finally the imagination of Mr. KV Reddy in the eye of Marcus Bartley is CP Jamb lingamâs and Bhaktavatsalamâs âMaya Bazarâ. Moral Integrity: As it is a derivative from Mahabharatha, it brings out the instances of the Kings earlier. Even though there are no objectionable elements in the movie, it brings out nature of people that we can relate to. Characters like Revathi(Chaya Devi) and Sauna (CSR Anjaneyulu) exhibit the natures of people that we see in the everyday world. The theme along with the presentation has done the job what the director wanted to convey. And this movie can be suggested to any kind of audience right from children to the old people. The elements it contains seem entertaining to children as well any section of the society. Also, the theme of the movie is not intended for any particular part of the audience. Therefore this movie remains an all time hit for all sections of the society. Kind of Entertainment : Even though the author thought of putting a sequence from Mahabharatha with a better outlook, the audience gave a tremendous response to the film. A film running for one year in a theater (Durga Kala Mandir, Vijayawada) in fact tells the kind of entertainment that it has given. The film had such an impact that later it came as a serial in a magazine called Vijaya Chitra for quite a long time. Even now it is not a wonder that if the movie is released it would work wonders once again. Cinema and Society: In the present day, here titles play a pivotal role in the success of a cinema; a title which has no mention anywhere in the cinema has been positively accepted by the audience (of those days). The word âBazarâ in âMaya Bazarâ was not a Telugu phrase. But, âMaya Bazarâ title was retained keeping in view, the popularity Surabhi Natya Mandali attained though their stage dramas for over 45 years. However, every care was exercised in not using this phrase in any frame of the movie. Speaking about fulfilling the idea of cinema, this movie has indeed become âsynonymousâ with cinema. The contribution of this movie to audience is a whole lot of entertainment and to the film industry is a master piece which can be used as an example or a guiding set of principles for any movie maker. Noted director, Dasari Narayana Rao quotes this movie as âAll Time Dictionary for Movie Makingâ. General Rating of the Movie: This masterpiece in those days, of course to the present day continues to be a trend setter with excellent response. The movie can be rated excellent and something more than that. The movie seems to be a very good guide especially for the students of film making for them to learn the techniques, methods etc. Not that the techniques are used in other movies, but that techniques being used in a time when there was hardly any technology. Also the unit of the movie seems to be a pool of Great Specimen People like KV Reddy, Pingali Nagendra Rao, Marcus Bartley, Ghantasala, actors wise NTR, ANR, CSR, SVR, Savitriâ¦.. And a pool of great heads will surely give the best and it has given. Therefore the movie can easily be called âMAYABAZAR- Melody, Myth and a Masterpieceâ. MAYABAZAR is a complete movie. Its a masterpiece. Sankarabaranam gurinchi chala thakkuve matladatha. I like this movie too. But cannot compare with mayabazar. Sankarabaranam is social issue based movie. Can be compared with maro charitra, dasi, bharatheeyudu and many other movies. Though it was a story of âPandavasâ, they never appeared on the screen but audience are under delusion that Pandavas are there in every scene. According to a survey conducted in 1996 by special edition of India Today Mayabazar is named as the most outstanding movie ever made in the history of Telugu film industry. This became the baseline for all future movies in all fields. The Film mentions Gongoora pickle, a very favorite pickle to the Telugu people of all times. The dialogue writer Pingali hails from Bandar (Machilipatnam) and very convincingly was able to integrate gongura into Mahabharatham R.Nageswararao who played Dussashanudu has the recurring dialogue "ade mana takshana kartavyam". Only on a couple of occasions does he have a line that does not have that phrase in it. It became quite a catchy phrase among the youth of that era. Balakrishna (Anji) played dual roles as 'Saradhi' and Dwarapalaka. Actor Gummadi recalls that K.V.Reddy tried to show the similarities of the noses of both NTR and Gummadi in one shot so that it establishes the resemblance of the relationship of brothers. The Song Lahiri lahiri lo was shot in three different locations at three different timings. But we cannot spot the difference. You would wonder if you know the fact that part of the song was shot at an indoor studio, at noon!! The introduction of Savitri was done in a single shot - young Sashirekha sitting near the water, camera pans on water and Savitri is shown. When Ghatothkacha lands on the mountain (to fight with Abhimanyu) a small piece of the mountain is shown to have fallen down. It was shown to establish the weight of the Rakshasa, such minute details were also taken care of! The trick shots of gimbaLi and gilpam are done so neatly they still discuss about it even now. He had shown the transformation of Savithri (Sashirekha) from kid to matured girl in a very single shot and that shot even today remains mystery. How could he achieve the shot when he hardly had any modern techniques and equipment? There are many such things to tell about his greatness and his exemplary work in this film.
