Brett Favre provides Monday Night excitement to end worst day of the week http://mytensense.com/2009/10/brett-favre-provides-monday-ni ght-excitement-to-end-worst-day-of-the-week/ Monday is considered the most dreaded day of the week because it is the day most people start their work week. But if you’re a football fan or you like drama, this Monday will end with a lot of excitement because tonight future NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre and his Minnesota Vikings (3-0) play host to Green Bay, where Favre played for 16 seasons and won a Super Bowl in 1996. Favre retired after his 16th season in Green Bay in 2007, but he changed his mind and Green Bay’s management didn’t welcome him back, deciding to give Aaron Rodgers, the Packers’ 2005 first-round draft pick, a chance to start behind center. So Favre played last season with the New York Jets before retiring again at the end of the season. After an on-and-off again talks about retirement this past summer, Favre finally signed with the patient Vikings, the NFC North division rival of his former Packers. Favre said he isn’t looking for revenge when Green Bay (2-1) comes to Minneapolis tonight. The new Vikings quarterback and his Packers replacement Aaron Rodgers each have said it’s “just another game”. But it’s not just another Monday Night Football game for Favre, Rodgers or Packers fans. The game is being aired on ESPN with an 8:30 p.m. kickoff, and ESPN analyst Jon Gruden doesn’t believe this will be just another game for Favre. Gruden said he couldn’t sleep for week when he was preparing Tampa Bay to play his former Oakland Raiders team in Super Bowl XXXVII. Gruden’s Bucs trounced his former team 48-21 to make him the youngest coach to win a Super Bowl. Favre probably has felt the same leading up to tonight’s game against his former team, and he should get more anxious when he actually returns to Green Bay for the second game of the series on Nov. 1. Favre, the NFL’s all-time leader in quarterback victories, passing yards and passing touchdowns, is the greatest Packers quarterback since Bart Starr led Green Bay to five Super Bowls in the 1960s. Nevertheless, the Packers pushed Favre, who turns 40 on Saturday, out the door in favor of Rodgers when the 10-time-Pro Bowl quarterback second-guessed retiring. So it’s only human nature if Favre, despite saying it’s “just another game”, seeks revenge and wants to prove Green Bay made a mistake. |
