Preview: Packers at Vikings By Rob Reischel Posted: Sept. 29, 2009 When: 7:30 p.m. Monday. Where: Metrodome, Minneapolis. Television: ESPN. Radio: AM-620 in Milwaukee. Wayne Larrivee will call the play-by-play action for the Packer Radio Network with Larry McCarren providing the analysis. Line: Vikings by 3 1/2. Series record: Packers lead, 49-45-1. Last time they met: Minnesota wins, 28-27, on Nov. 9, 2008. Touchdown catches by Sidney Rice and Chester Taylor, plus two safeties on defense, staked the Vikings to a 21-10 lead midway through the third quarter. The Packers rallied to take the lead on Nick Collins' 59-yard interception return for a score and Will Blackmon's 65-yard punt return for a touchdown. Collins' pick was one of three for the Packers in the game. Adrian Peterson, who had 30 carries for 192 yards for the Vikings, scored on a 29-yard run with 2:22 left to give the Vikings the 28-27 lead. The Packers had one last chance, but Mason Crosby's 52-yard field-goal try was wide right with 26 seconds left. The Packers' five-game winning streak that was snapped in the last meeting was the longest streak for either team since the Packers won five straight from 1983-'85. Over the last 15 seasons (1994-2008), these teams have accounted for 11 NFC Central/North division championships. Through three games, Aaron Rodgers is just one of three quarterbacks across the league that has thrown over 50 pass attempts without an interception. Rodgers is tops among the group (Kyle Orton and Marc Bulger the others) with 90 attempts on the season. For a 17th consecutive season, the Packers appear on Monday Night Football, the most successful series in sports television history. The Packers own the NFC's longest MNF appearance streak (1993-2009). Denver (18, 1992-2009) owns the NFL's longest streak. FIVE THINGS TO WATCH1 .HE'S BAAACK: Brett Favre, one of the greatest players in Packer history, now dons purple, much to the chagrin of Green Bay's fan base. Favre came out of his latest retirement on Aug. 18 and signed a two-year, $25 million deal. Favre thinks he can win a Super Bowl in Minnesota, but he also wants revenge at Packer general manager Ted Thompson - the man who closed the door on Favre in the summer of 2008. Favre's first chance for payback is finally here. 2.THE OTHER GUY: Much will be made all week of Favre and his first game against the Packers. But this also will be the biggest regular-season game ever for Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Can Rodgers rise to the occasion and outplay his former teammate? Or will the stage be too big for Favre's former understudy? 3.SIMPLY THE BEST: Minnesota gave up a first-round pick and two third-round selections for defensive Jared Allen in April 2008. The Vikings then gave Allen a six-year, $72.36 million contract. To date, Allen has been worth every draft pick and every cent. He's the best defensive end in football and has to be licking his chops knowing Daryn Colledge will be at left tackle for Green Bay. 4.ALL DAY: Minnesota's Adrian Peterson, the best running back on the planet, is nicknamed A.D. because he can run all day. For most of his first three NFL seasons, he's done that, punishing foes right and left. Green Bay had trouble with Cedric Benson (29 carries, 141 yards) and Steven Jackson (27 carries, 117 yards) the last two weeks. Facing Peterson will be a much tougher test. 5.WOOD, SO GOOD: Packer cornerback Charles Woodson will be in the running for defensive player of the year if he continues his current play. Woodson has three interceptions, one touchdown and 18 tackles in just three games. Woodson used to play cat-and-mouse games with Favre in practice and now gets that chance in a live game. THE MATCHUPSQUARTERBACKS Minnesota's Brett Favre has been just what the Vikings hoped. He was a game manager the first two weeks and handled the task with aplomb. Last week, with the game on the line, he fired a 36-yard TD pass in the final seconds to steal a win. Although Favre turns 40 on Oct. 10, his passer rating is 94.5, and he remains one of the game's top 10 quarterbacks. Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers had his best game of the year against St. Louis, posting a 126.9 passer rating, throwing for two scores and rushing for another. → ADVANTAGE: Even RUNNING BACKS Minnesota's Adrian Peterson is not just the best back in football. He's quickly becoming the finest of this generation and one of the best to ever play. Peterson (6 foot 1, 217 pounds) leads the NFL in rushing (357) and combines incredible speed, strength, toughness and vision. He's truly a once-in-a-decade back. Green Bay's Ryan Grant had a season-high 99 yards last week. ADVANTAGE: Vikings RECEIVERS Bernard Berrian is Minnesota's No. 1 by default. He's a burner who excels on deep routes but doesn't like going over the middle or fighting through traffic. Third-year man Sidney Rice was solid as a rookie, slipped last year but appears to be regaining form. Rookie speedster Percy Harvin is raw but has 4.3 speed and returned a kick 101 yards for a score last week. Donald Driver is five catches shy of the franchise's all-time mark, but James Jones remains missing. ADVANTAGE: Packers OFFENSIVE LINE Minnesota LT Bryant McKinnie and LG Steve Hutchinson form one of football's better duos. Hutchinson is a masterful technician, while the long-armed McKinnie can dominate for stretches. He also vanishes at times, too. The rest of the group is average. Green Bay's line had its best day of the year against St. Louis, allowing two sacks and three quarterback hits. ADVANTAGE: Vikings DEFENSIVE LINE Vikings RDE Jared Allen is as good at his position as anyone in football. Allen, who was third in the NFC with 14.5 sacks last season, combines unique skills with tremendous desire. The tackle tandem of Pat Williams and Kevin Williams is football's best, while LDE Ray Edwards is serviceable. Green Bay's Johnny Jolly is playing at a high level and has already been part of two plays involving turnovers. ADVANTAGE: Vikings LINEBACKERS Vikings MLB E.J. Henderson, who suffered a season ending foot injury last year, has Pro Bowl ability. He's coming off a 13-tackle game and never leaves the field. SLB Chad Greenway, the 17th overall pick in 2006, has come into his own after a slow start to his career. Green Bay continues to rotate seven players at four spots and is getting solid productivity from the unit. But after Brandon Chillar allowed two TD receptions last week, look for foes to attack him in the passing game. ADVANTAGE: Vikings SECONDARY Green Bay's Charles Woodson is the best cornerback in the division, and maybe in football, but Minnesota's Antoine Winfield isn't far behind. Winfield is small (5-9, 180), but plays like a linebacker and has Woodson-like instincts. Teams often avoid Winfield's side of the field altogether. RCB Cedric Griffin is improved, while safeties Tyrell Johnson and Madieu Williams are solid. Woodson already has three interceptions, while the Packers got a lift with the return of S Nick Collins last week. ADVANTAGE: Packers SPECIAL TEAMS Harvin is a true difference maker on kickoffs, where he's averaging 35.8 yards per return. Former Packer Ryan Longwell remains extremely reliable, hitting 85.7% of his kicks this year and 84.4% since leaving Green Bay. Mason Crosby missed his first NFL extra point last week, while Will Blackmon has done more dancing than running. ADVANTAGE: Vikings COACHING Minnesota's Brad Childress and Green Bay's Mike McCarthy could both lose their jobs if their years don't go as planned. Childress is 27-24, won the NFC North last year and has increased his win total each season. McCarthy was hired five days after Childress, has gone 29-22, won the division in 2007 and reached the NFC Championship Game that year. In six meetings, McCarthy is 5-1 against Childress. ADVANTAGE: Packers |
