'Asuras are dark skinned' is a misconception. Asuras live among us...in fact each one of us has asura qualities. Actual puranas that followed vedas attribute little less power to Devi. But this story of Devi creating dasavathara and mastery over trinity must have originated in shakti purana, by shaktites. This is also variable...like our Temple does Bala Tripura sundari, Gayatri,Annapoorna, Lalitha, Gauri,Lakshmi, Saraswati, Durga , Kali I believe the same pattern as followed in the Vijayawada Kanakadurga temple... There is the other set of Dasa Mahavidyas - the ten manifestations of Shakti followed by Shaktas... the forms are ferocious and scary,and I had always avoided them due to conditioning myself. Chinnappudu Skanda Purana story detailed ga chadivaanu oka saari swathi lo. Mahishasura was the most powerful demon ever. No one could beat him. First all devathas try individually and together and were easily defeated. Then all others garudas, yakshas, gandharvas were also defeated. Then vishnu himself enters the field...his sudarshan chakra wont work... and got kicked by the asura and faints. Seeing this, shiva enters the field with fury...and uses trishula and third eye...even they wont work...after all have tried and defeated by him, andaru meeting petti decide chesthaaru..we cant defeat this guy individually...but lets create a power that has the powers of all of us...thats how Lalitha Devi was created and she gets all the powers...sudarshan chakra...trishul...third eye...vajraydha etc...even then it took 9 days to defeat that guy...chaalaa interesting gaa unde aa story...
