NEW DELHI: Congress may need more time to resolve the Andhra tangle. After meeting with PM Manmohan Singh and key Congress trouble-shooter Pranab Mukherjee, the leadership has asked K V P Ramachandra Rao, the driving force behind the Jagan-for-CM campaign, to stay on in the Capital. The Congress high command has sought to engage Rao in a full-fledged effort to bring about an accommodation with Jagan which is essential in the party proceeding with its post-YSR plans for Andhra. While Congress needs to settle on a successor, it has to get Jaganâs blessings to facilitate the process. Congress sources reiterated that the leadership was not in favour of Jaganâs candidacy, but it was pointed out that there was a stark lack of alternatives in view of Rao apparently holding out despite meeting several top leaders. Any attempt to force a solution may only leave a high command nominee critically vulnerable to the YSR lobby. Aware that it needed the cooperation of the Jagan faction â clearly dominant in CLP â the leadership has chosen to bide time while conveying that the YSR familyâs choice would be key to a resolution of the power struggle that has erupted after the late CMâs death in a chopper crash last week. âI am not able to tell how or when the political situation would be resolved,â said a leader party to the discussions. After meeting Congress chief Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday, Rao met the PM on Wednesday morning where Singh is understood to have asked about the family. The evening meeting with Mukherjee was more business-like and focused on the post-YSR scenario. This indicates that Mukherjee may have to play his usual trouble-shooting role soon. The mourning period, the Congress-drawn deadline to start discussions, will end on Thursday. Indications that the dispute could drag on may leave K Rosaiah in the CMâs saddle for longer. By all accounts, Congress is caught in the classic Catch-22 situation. The party has more or less made up its mind to reject Jagan for the post held by his father. But the party realises that an unhappy young Reddy can make life hell for a YSR successor. Consultations continued with urban development minister S Jaipal Reddy and former minister Renuka Chowdhury meeting Sonia. The repercussions of making a bad choice seem to be playing heavily on the minds of Congress brass. The history of a fractious AP unit and the open threat by the Reddy group is a nightmare given that the majority in the assembly of seven MLAs is too thin. Even those sympathetic to Jaganâs cause have said that the high command may not accept him, notwithstanding the implications. As it grapples with the issue, sources said that the saving grace for Congress is that YSR group cannot take the rebellion to a split as it would only weaken Jaganâs chances of getting the top post. Congress reckons that Jagan needs to be mindful of political adverseries and cannot go for broke. | ||

HYDERABAD: In all the years when YSR was in the limelight, Congress Rajya Sabha MP K V P Ramachandra Rao, seen as the late CMâs alter ego, made strenuous efforts to keep out of public gaze â staying off TV channels and newspapers. But with his friend and medical college senior in Gulbarga where they studied gone for ever, KVP is now on the centrestage. Seen as the grand conductor behind the Jagan-for-CM chant, the nondescript MP has suddenly gained a public profile. In recent days, KVP emerged as an effective organiser, turning a swarm of loyal MLAs to the advantage of the son whom he has skillfully projected as inheritor of YSRâs mantle. The irony is that Jagan does not have any particular liking for KVP â in fact, while leaving for Bangalore after the 2004 elections, he had told his father that he would return only after he got rid of KVP. If Andhra Pradesh Congress leaders are to be believed, YSRâs family has in the past resented KVPâs influence but the late CM stood by his buddy. Jaganâs tantrum did not work then. Now, their mutual interests driving them together, Jagan and KVP have teamed up in the post-YSR scenario. Has he overplayed his hand? What has raised Congress high commandâs hackles is that ministers are regularly gathering at KVPâs home and taking instructions from him. YSRâs critics argue that the party had become subservient to one man. Yet, at least in the short run, KVP canât lose. The high command will depend on him to rein in the Jagan bhajan and he has ensured that the post-YSR arrangements will have the YSR familyâs stamp of approval. Those in the know were always aware that KVP was YSRâs deal maker. Given the official position of advisor to CM, no deal in Andhra could go through without KVP. âHe controlled the entire state machinery. Nothing moved without his nod,â a source said.
