What might have transpired in the whole fiasco This is what i constructed the picture based on the various news reports that came in 16 different channels as well as some gosspping that happened in the local circles that included some political aware people as well as with some people in aeronautics related departments. There are 3 stages of reporting a chopper going off the radar by the ATC. In the first phase it is temporariry disruption in communication that also included chopper reporting to a different ATC. No action will be taken in that situation than waiting. In the second phase, the ATC tries to send high frequecy communication to the pilot and also try to communicate with the other ATC involved. In the third phase, it is a continuous absence of communication and ATC will air the data to all the ATCs involved in the near by zones. As part of third phase, the chennai ATC communicated to all the ATCs in andhra like vizag, vjw, tirupati, hyderabad that the CM chopper has gone out of the radar and would have landed (they dont use the word crash) in the area near to kurnool, so try to get in touch with them. Now the information is interpreted as YSR's chopper has emergency landed in some nearby area to kurnool, so immediately the kurnool SP was messaged to arrange for adequate protection to CM to get him back to kurnool and eventually to Hyd by road. SP thought it was an oppurtunity to call for a media briefing and told that YSR chopper landed in the near by area, and he would be brought to the guest house with adequate security. Media reported this as YSR already being in the kurnool guest house and he would be going back to Hyd by road. This has given enough solace for people in hyderabad and thought their efforts to engage YSR and party over phones failing is some sort of security measures to ensure that first YSR is brought to secure place. Once this news was highlighted in the national media, people from Delhi called up leaders in Hyderabad and inquired about the communication that could be established with YSR so that PM/Sonia could speak to him. Now once they got back to Kurnool SP, he was caught in a bit of awkward position as he is actually waiting for the communication from Hyd/YSR' security chief to contact him and he did not get any until then. He told back the same and then the real panic kicked in. Rosayya alerted the officials to re-engage in communicating with YSR and party and when all the efforts failed, he called for a meet and announced they dont have any co-ordinates of the chopper and they are desperately looking for help. By the time, they figured out the technologies and people that are in the need of the hour, delhi people already realized the mistake. By the time, communications could be established with the yelahanka airbase in Bangalore for air surveillance, it was 4PM. They made an attempt but by that time the sun set, with weather conditions worsening and visibility remaining very poor to none. So all the choppers returned back in an hour or so and we did not have any plan in action. Some experts looked up the history of the craft to see the kind of problems that could be developed and the history of the area and the kind of mishaps that happened in the past in the area and came up with a set of eventualities that need to be probed. And then delhi people with some brains decided to send a sukhoi air-craft that would fly over the mountains to look for any SOS signals. As per the rumours, the craft could successfully locate the area from where the Emergency signal (ELT) was emanating in the forest and mapped the area co-ordinates. With that, they sent some ISRO un manned craft to take pictures of that area and realized the difficulty of the terrain. In fact in the night, chidambaram said all the activities by choppers are stopped and will resume in the morning. But still they sent some military parties in to the forest to ensure that some thing is still going on. Meanwhile, our media was fully busy circulating news about some imaginery tribal hearing a sound, some oil marks in the water, YSR party making a contact over mobile at 12 and google maps are requested for the whole forest and that some ISRO flight will go and beam pictures to locate the chopper etc., Almost all of them were unanimous in saying that since no ELT signal is received, there is no crash (Dont know what was their receiver to ensure there is no SoS Signal). Some aviation experts, police pople, ex-naxals, tribals were called to entertain us over the night and kept on giving us a perspective that would keep us on the tenterhooks, sometimes positive and rarely the converse of it. First thing in the morning, air force people sent a couple of choppers with flight data to reach the co-ordinates given by sukhoi and with in half an hour they could locate the wreckage. Meanwhile our media continued to post things like it is the grey-hound who found the chopper, it is bharthi from yelahanka, bangalore who could see the chopper hanging from a tree so it could be emergency landing but not the crash. With this information, one prominent leader from kurnool came on tv and said that YSR is safe, some lady by name bharthi (he thought so by name) could eventually locate YSR, he watched the same on tv (he is giving info back to tv, from the info from tv) and they are bursting crackers and distributing sweets and that YSR has emerged victorious out of the clutches of death and he would be arriving in exactly 1 hour. I lost my touch with outside world at this point of time as both my net, cable went down. And as i was browsing the news paper, i got a call from a friend and i knew what it was. The one person that we were desperately waiting to see in full colours on that day, is no more. Bon Voyage, if not to YSR, to his departed soul. |
