Rayalseematelugodu:There are three brothers.... they left for some place together..... Their mother gave them some chapati's for the way. In the way they found a shed and stop there to take rest. Since the three of them were tired, they slept. Now the eldest of them woke up. He counted the chapatis and divided them into three equal parts. One chapati was left which was given to a dog nearby. He ate his part of chapati's and went to sleep again. After some time the second brother woke up and he also divided the remaining chapati's into 3 equal parts, giving one chapati to dog. He also ate his part and went to sleep. Similarly the youngest brother woke up and did the same what his elders had done. After some time all the three woke up and again divided the remaining chapati's into three equal parts, giving 1 chapati to dog. Everyone ate his part and left the place. Now Who's going to tell me how many chapati's were there.... ??

Mohamatam:BTW in this puzzle we don't know what is x? we have to find out
yes. we need to submit values starting from 1 and check if the result is integer
Mohamatam:how did U arrive at this formula?
there are 4 levels ..lets L1, L2, L3 and L4: lets after L4 each one gets x chapatis ..so at level there must be 3x+1 chapathis. to have 3x+1 at L3 there should be 3/2(3x+1)+1 chapathis; similary ..at L2 : 3/2*L3+1 at L1 : 3/2*L2+1 |

total number of chapathis = (81x + 65) / 8 ; where x is the number of chapatis that each one gets at the end. so the least integer evaluation of this formula is when x=7; the umber is 79. |

Havingfun:Not convincing,
i never said that 3r + 1 = 2r it just means that 3r+1 chapatis became 2r chapatis for the next round for the first round, the no of chapatis is 3p + 1 for the second round, the no of chapatis is 3q + 1, which is same as 2p => 2p = 3q+1 got it? |

minimum chapatis = 79 my solution: 1) initial no. of chapatis = 3a+1 2) 2a = 3b+1 3) 2b = 3c+1 4) 2c = 3d+1 2) 3) and 4) mandate that b and c are odd numbers so start with d=3,7 d=7 will satisfy all equations. somebody please confirm is 79 correct? Saughmraat: (3p + 1) --> 2p (1st) (3q + 1) --> 2q (2nd) (3r + 1) --> 2r (3rd) (3s + 1) --> 2s (last) s = 7 => r = 11, q = 17, p = 26
Not convincing, as the values doesnt match all the queations... let us say 3s+1 = 2s is true for 7... but 3r+1 = 2r is not trues for r=11. Also I am looking for something like x+y = 7 and x-y = 4 sort of approach to arrive at x=4 and x=3... not trial and error by substitution method. Could you please elaborate? Calling...Mohamatam |

Havingfun:a step by step answer?
the following sequence represents the change in the count of chapatis x ==> y ==> z ==> a (x became y, y became z, z became a) x = 3p + 1 (original) (for some integer p) y = 3q + 1 (after 1st son ate) z = 3r + 1 (after 2nd son ate) a = 3s + 1 (After 3rd son ate) Since, y is the value after removing ((1/3rd of the 3p) + 1) from x, y = 2p => 2p = 3q + 1 => q = (2p-1)/3 (3p + 1) --> 2p (1st) (3q + 1) --> 2q (2nd) (3r + 1) --> 2r (3rd) (3s + 1) --> 2s (last) similarly, we can have 2q = 3r + 1 => r = (2q-1)/3 2r = 3s + 1 => s = (2r-1)/3 NOW, we have a constraint, none of p,q,r and s should be fractions we can start with s = 1,2,3.... till we get all of them as integers s = 7 => r = 11, q = 17, p = 26 |

Elder 79 - 27 = 52 .... (26*3 + 1) - (26 + 1) = 52 Middle 52 - 18 = 34 .... (17*3 + 1) - (17 + 1) = 34 Younger 34 - 12 = 22 .... (11*3 + 1) - (11 + 1) = 22 All 22 - 22 = 0 .... ( 7*3 + 1) - 22 = 0 ==== I could reverse engineer and confirm on 79... but really curious to know how you achieved the answer.... Could you please post a step by step answer? |

There are three brothers.... they left for some place together..... ?? |
