for me it was a suspense revealed only at the end and the same was said to me by a couple of freinds....i think that is what made the book interesting to me | ||

ELCA spoiler alert ettu if pozibul Spoiler alert very good book to read...it was the one of the books i took a long time to read it felt like a hogwash in the beginning but in the end when pi talks to the japanese officials and u realize the questions about his travel companions i was blown away till then it looked like a fantasy then u are left to grapple with what he actually did or didnt do? wonderful narration by yann martel no wonder it won the booker prize | ||

good book if i remember right the author mentioned something in the foreword that the whole premise was based on a real life incident in the 70s from india, not very sure though it's been a few yrs since i read this | ||

Piscine molitor patel named after a swimming pool in france who hides himself behind the cool soundig PI using the first two letters of his first name to save his name from being butchered to pissinx patel and thus becomes PI Patel He is the son of a Zoox owner in Pondicherry and a doting mother and an elder bro completes their perfect family. Unlike his elder bro who embraces the coolest game of cricket to become popular in school PI finds interests in religions and animals. Though hailing from a practicing hindu family he shows keen interest towards learning about various religions and also goes to an extent of practicing them.And taken into consideration his father being in Zoox business the interest in animals comes naturally to him. The time is set in 1977 and PI was 16 yr old when the Major action in this book was taking place. It was the Dark Era of desham under Indiramma. Frustrated by her ep rule and disgusted by the way she was treating the people of Tamil nadu PIs family decide to migrate to Canada. In that process they close down the ••• and they sell off all the animals to various zoos around the world from Minnesota to Tokyo. So the day comes for them to leave for Canada for good. They board a south East Asian cargo ship and they load it with all the animals that are supposed to be delivered to the zoos in that part of the world. And so they start their Journey. Everything seems to go as per the plan and uneventful till one night when a loud sound disturbs the sleep of Pi. He walks out into the ship corridor to see that there was a Major damage done to the ships structure. And before he knows what exactly happened to the ship It drowns and pi finds himself in clinging onto his life in a small Life Boat and survives for over 200 days in the waters of pacific b4 he gets saved. Well then it would be just another cast away kinda story aint it? The twist is PI share that life boat with a Zebra a Hyena an orangutan and a 450 pound Royal Bengal Tiger named Richard parker. So the Hyena kills the zebra and the orangutan and before it can attack PI the tiger kills the hyena. And PI co exists with that Tiger for over 200 days in that small life boat without killing it. To do that he uses all the knowledge he acquired while studying about animals in zoos. Every day he has to fight with the gruesome ambience of sea and also with the killer feeding machine dats on boat. One is a physical fight another psychological warfare fare. In that process PI a pious, vegetarian, feeble and harmless teenager transforms into someone who don’t mind eating the meat of his own species just to stay alive. And through this whole ordeal he realizes that the tiger did a lot of good for him by scaring him for his life which in turn increased his zeal for survival. So the tiger becomes his soulmate,his best friend and what not. And finally when rescued at the shores of mexico he narrates his unbelievable survivor story to the two Japanese officials who were investigating about the ship. And when he tells them the story of life boat and tiger and hyena the officials wont buy it. And when PI akes changes to his narration by replacing the animals in his narration with humans with is mother and a sailor and a cook the officials say its believable. Now what really happened? Did PI really boarded the life boat with animals or humans? If it was humans why he was narrating to us all along that they were animals? These are the quecchins that the author leaves to readers to fig out? Except the brain wash on God,Belief,rituals and crap this is a very good story to read and tell. |
