Congress leader D.K. Shivakumar, who raised the matter in the House, claimed that Iskcon, which runs the Akshayadhama mid-day meal scheme in select schools in the state, was misusing its contract to raise funds from abroad in the name of feeding poor school children. He alleged the donations received were not being used fof the mid-day meal scheme, but were being diverted to real estate and other lucrative activities. Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Siddaramaiah also lambasted Iskcon for selling the "self respect" of the state and the country by printing multi-coloured posters of hungry-looking children to raise money in other countries for the Akshaya Patra scheme.
