A 25-year-old Jersey City man drowned Friday in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area as he tried to help a friend who was having trouble swimming, state park officials said.

The man, whose name has not been released, was swimming in a group of 10 in Adams Creek, which is a tributary of the Delaware River in Pike County. Emergency officials were notified at 1:50 p.m. that the man had gone down.

An hour later, a National Park Service diver found the man's body, submerged in 17 feet of water.

The drowning appears to be accidental, said Delaware Water Gap spokeswoman Deb Nordeen.
