Find a dd-wrt compatible router. dd-wrt rocks. Installation gurinchi bhayapettaaru kondaru, but it is very simple and doesn't take more than 10-15 minutes including reading instructions. |

Mallik:Tenali maam: Why are you installing PS3Media server?
PS3MediaServer will help me stream all my movies/music/photos from my Windows home server. It can play pretty much every video and audio format without any issues unlike other media servers. In research of countless hours comparing all the available media servers, PS3 + PS3MediaServer is the best combo |

I am setting up the following environment, got the equipment, but nothing connected yet 1. PS3 40 GB --> My Streaming server. I will be installing PS3MediaServer. More details at http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/ http://ps3mediaserver.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=2 2. Windows Home Server. Got the HP MediaSmartServer LX 195 http://reviews.cnet.com/soho-servers/mediasmart-server-lx195 /4505-3125_7-33655163.html?tag=box4505 3. Denon 790. Audio Video Receiver. I have really spent a ton of time to research for the best streaming server and I have zeroed on PS3 because it is a freaking powerful machine. I have compared it against all the other streaming servers like Popcorn Hour, Mvix etc. I will let you know when I am done setting it up |

For those who are interested here is WDS (wireless Distribution System) primer. Here is the "wireless bridge" implementation of WDS: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wireless_Bridge Mana main router gets internet connection from cable/dsl modem. Manam okati, rendu computers in ethernet tho (wired) connect chestam, migilinavi wireless tho connect chestamu. Now, on different room/floor meeku couple of computers/dvd players (which needs internet connection) unnayi anukondi. Either remote PCs ki wireless connection undali or you have to run ethernet cables from main router which is not feasible. The better option is to go for wireless bridge. Get a second router and install DD-WRT (http://www.dd-wrt.com) firmware on it. Configure the 2nd router to connect to main router over wireless and output the internet connection through wired ports. This way, even a device with network port (but not wireless capable) can get internet connection. I had this setup running for long time. Bottleneck is the wireless protocol (802.11g) which peaks at 54mbps. Recent ga, I upgraded both (main/2nd) router to 802.11n models. Now, the connection between them goes as far as 300mpbs which makes my HTPC/PS3 play HD media over wireless with no hiccups. |

Mallik:Simba: Desham la venjoyingaaa? kewl.. quick suggestion ivvu.. PS3 or XBox.. my requirement is to stream almost all file types (both audio and video ) esp, hidef.. And, do the streaming depend on my PC video card OR, the job of streaming and its quality is controlled by console itself? I will use HDMI..
Naa vote PS3 ke. Streaming depends on your PC's CPU and network card. Sometimes the streaming s/w in PC has to transcode (encoding to different format) the media on-the-fly which consumes good processing power. Having a gigabit (1000 mbps)network card instead of regular (100 mpbs) is preferred. This network may just cost $20 for desktop version. |

Rasputin:I would suggest building your own HTPC
Here there is no streaming involved. It is a headless PC hosting all media and playing directly on TV (as monitor). The problem I experienced is like this. I download lot of media through torrents, so need to use browser/torrent clients on HTPC which will block my TV viewing since there is no separate monitor for it. So, I use my upstairs PC to download everything and stream (share the downloaded folder). The HTPC and PS3 work as media clients and play on TV. This way I can use my TV to watch cable/DVD etc while I check the downloading status on other PC (server). One caveat. Playing high resolution (HD) media over wireless is choppy. So, I setup a WDS (wireless distribution system) using a second router. If anyone interested, I can give details. |

Mallik, Saw your mail. I am in India on vacation, so not visiting ccdb. Apple TV, PS3, XBox, Wii are all media clients, not streamers (servers). So, nee media antha PC lo store chesi, ee media clients ki stream cheyyali. This media client sits next to tv and outputs audio/video through wires. Ee clients ni either wired (ethernet) or wireless tho nee router ki connect cheyyali. Mr. Hyd ichchina link is very good covering all the details about setup. |

Mallik bro, I don't why and how AppleTV got into your requirements. I would suggest building your own HTPC. You can start with a basic one for $500+. Later you can upgrade it as and when you wish. |
