American Beauty lacks a proper story structure but the character weaving by Allan, coming from theatrical background is so powerful that no one would ever even realize to probe into the story. Sam Mendes read the screenplay on a flight and Steven Speilberg liked it so immensely and the film materialised so quickly than what Alln originally thought. At the end what you carry home is each and every character from the film. One such character is colonel's, played by Chris Copper. Here is the way I understood the homicide. It was Kevin's wife who planned to kill him and as it turns out, Kevin gets killed by Colonel Fitts, the neighbour. Strange are the ways of life, though the end result is the same and suddenly you don't hate kevin's wife (Annette) so much. Now coming to reason. We see so many characters like colonel's in real life. They desire some thing in life and preach the exact opposite, just to show the world that they are just normal. Somewhere deep inside, colonel doesn;t think being a gay is normal and he considers it a taboo. To disguise his real self, he behaves as though he hates gays. He is not rebel and bold enough to show the world that he is a gay, considering his military background, but deep inside he is longing for Kevin, after he misunderstood Kevin, when he saw him with his son. He guesses Kevin is a gay and waits for the opportunity. With this background, oneday he gave it a try, so passionately. Kevin's reaction was nothing less than an insult for him, unable to bear this and to keep his gay inclinations a secret, he has no other choice but to kill Kevin. However, I don;t think he killed him because he saw Kevin with his son. Neither he killed him because he thought Kevin was gay. Neither he killed him because he thought being a gay is not nobel enough to live in this society. "Movies are craft, they're not art. The art comes out of the craft.
