The government will allow sale of lakhs of acres of agricultural surplus land to industries, infrastructure and projects of public importance. Sale of land declared as agricultural surplus is not permitted, and the government has till now been giving the land on long lease. As per the law the maximum agricultural land that a person can own is 53 acres; any excess, or surplus, is taken over. “With this amendment, any person alloted agricultural surplus land will become the absolute owner and can resell it,” said a senior revenue official. The government had made a similar amendment on urban surplus land in its first term. Sources told this correspondent that the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, had asked officials to amend on agriculture surplus land. He wanted an ordinance to be brought in to avoid the delay caused by the regular process of introducing Bill in the Assembly. Dr Reddy’s decision came during a review on mega projects. Sources said Navayuga, promoters of Krishnapat-nam Port, told Dr Reddy that banks were refusing to lend money if the land was leased out. Banks are insisting that the government should sell the land, the company said. When revenue officials referred to ban on sale of agricultural surplus land, the Chief Minister asked for the law to be amended. http://www.deccanchronicle.com/hyderabad/cm-ends-bar-land-sa le-669 |
