FROM IMDB...

...on Tuesday. I had to sign a non disclosure agreement, so I can't really spoil any of the details. I have to be "responsible". I did not read the book so my impressions were only from the version of the film that I saw. This was a rough cut of the film and I suspect it may be re-edited so this review may not reflect the final cut.

I have to say that this was not your typical Scorsese film. No mobsters, no Rolling Stones (it was set in 1954), and no 296 uses of the "F"-word. Just a good old fashioned mystery and thriller with an ample amount of action mixed in. It ALMOST had the feel and style of a horror movie at times. This was a refreshing surprise as the Horror genre desperately needs to be resuscitated.

As stated by the IMDB plot summary, a U.S. Marshall and his partner investigate the disappearance of a patient from a hospital on a small island. The clues he finds and the behavior of the hospital staff become more and more puzzling with every twist and turn. Think along the lines of The Wicker man (1973) or possibly Jacob's Ladder or Angel Heart.

The problem with this rough edit was that many found the story to be confusing. It was definitely a puzzle, but there was more than 1 story line being told and it was a little disorienting. This was probably deliberate, but it was hard to concentrate during the confusion. When the puzzle is finally assembled, everything finally made sense. Additionally, I didn't like Michelle Williams in this. I don't know if it was her or her character that I didn't like or couldn't connect with. I usually like her, but not here.

On a positive note, there are a few scenes where Scorsese shows you something that is so visually imaginative and original in a way that only a true master director could. Leonardo DiCaprio was fully committed to the role and became the glue that held the story together and held my interest. Each and every supporting role was played flawlessly by an exceptional ensemble; Ben Kingsley, Max Von Sydow, Mark Ruffalo, Michelle Williams, Emily Mortimer, Patricia Clarkson, Ted Levine, Elias Koteas, Jackie Earl Haley, and John Carroll Lynch. Each one brought their own unique talent and I can't say anything bad about the acting.

I didn't score this film as excellent, but overall I thought it was very good. I would definitely recommend that you see it. I am going back to watch it again when it is released. Hope this was helpful.
