The only point in moving out to hit the stationary ball is if you think you can hit it for four. Plus it's handy if you don't have to stray too far from the safety of your crease. All of this is of course quite academic because the umpire eventually signalled dead ball, presumably invoking Law 23.3 (b) (vii) - "Either umpire shall call and signal Dead ball when...the bowler drops the ball accidentally before delivery". I reckon it's hard to hit a stationary ball for four with a cricket bat. I have seen it done once in a first-class match (by the Canterbury opener Barry Hadlee). On that occasion the ball as delivered by the bowler came to rest in the covers. That was about 25 years ago: the 2000 code stipulates (Law 24.7) that if the bowler delivers the ball and it comes to rest in front of the striker's wicket, "the umpire shall call and signal No ball and immediately call and signal Dead ball." Which makes Yuk Tang's post about running tactics academic. However if the ball dropped by Kartik were considered 'live', it would have made sense for Styris to head to the striker's end at the time McMillan played his shot (assuming Styris had a clue what was going on).
