Hyderabad May 20: The state has opened its investments score with Rs 750 crore in the new innings of Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddyâs government which began on Wednesday. Coinciding with the swearing in ceremony of Dr Reddy, the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) signed an agreement with a bio-pharma major, Lonza, at the international biotech conference in Atlanta, United States. The Switzerland-based Lonza will set up research and manufacturing facilities in a phased manner at the Genome Valley Special Economic Zone on the city outskirts. APIIC managing director, Mr B.P. Acharya handed over the letter of allotment to Lonza representatives. âThis is one of the largest investments in bio sector in the country,â Mr Acharya said adding that the facility would further establish that Genome Valley is best destination for biotechnology. In the first phase, Lonza will set up a research lab for tissue and cell isolation; in the second phase microbiological application lab, formulation development for microbial control for injectibles and small scale bio therapeutic unit will be set up. The second phase also includes additional lab for biologics and expanded large scale bio pharmaceutical manufacturing plant. Earlier, the Chief Minister, had written a letter to Mr Stefan Borgas, the chief executive officer of the company, informing him about the city becoming a natural choice for drug and bio pharma companies. He also explained about the advantages the companies get due to the existence several scientific research institutes including the CCMB, IICT and CDFD. Meanwhile, a brochure and CD on BioAsia 2010 to be held in city between February 3 and 6, 2010, was also released at the international convention being held at Atlanta. Good going YS and Congi!!!! |
