agree with you on everything. PVN ki credit ivvali .. but kaastho kusto migilindi Manmohan ki kooda dakkutundi kada .. I wonder why economy under Chandra Sekhar took such a beating! More so because Manmohan was the adviser to the PM Chandra Sekhar ! He performed exceedingly well under PVN, but not under Chandra Sekhar in almost the same roles gives us some indication into the role of PM PVN in Manmohan's success. :-)

/My question is how? Again like Manmohan, democratic processes have to be subverted and he needs to be "nominated" by the family, which would again see a repeat of 2004-09, when decisions pertaining to the country are not taken in 7 Race Course Rd but are taken in 10 Janpath. The final authority in the country should be with the PM not some where else, because the responsibility rests on the shoulders of the PM not some super PM who has the remote.//

I think you are talking about the "inherent" problem in congress party and as a matter of fact many other political parties in India, including TDP.

On the other hand, I am talking about the inherent problems in Indian democracy.

My bad if you understood it that "winnability" is the only factor. A big NO. Our democracy has not started functioning beyond the position of a CM or atbest a Central Minister. MLA/MPs though elected by people, we end with crap 60% of the times, irrespective of parties!

Consider this case of Modi, Lalu and Shiela Dikshit (everybody who is elected twice atleast).

Modi and Shiela - Each of them has their own +ves and -ves. In the case of Modi, the opposition accused him of anti-Muslim stand. But the people wanted him to serve them. Even with Shiela, though her opponents accused her of minority appeasement like regularizing slums of illegal Bangladeshi Muslims in Delhi .. people chose her. Effectively meaning, people weighed their choices and elected them.

On a hilarious note, there was a comment from a journalist after the Delhi assembly elections that, people could not connect with BJP because, they demanded Bangladeshi Muslims be driven from Delhi, which would effectively take away the freedom from lakhs of middle class and upper middle class societies in Delhi, the availability of cheap labor as maids and servants!!!

See, there you go.
Considering the current political scenario and the fate of congress party in TN, what are the chances that Chidambaram can ever make it as the CM of that state? Nil, I guess. I think he has better chances of becoming Indian PM than TN CM. For the post of TN CM, Jayalalitha the moron has "winnability"; sadly, Chidambaram does not.

//the world has moved beyond socialism, India needs to catch up.//

The most capitalistic country in the world is using tax payers money to bail out it's car and other manufacturing companies. It is also talking about a nationalised health system. If capitalism is all about cut throat competition and survival of the fittest, then why do that?
Socialism in one form/name or other will survive, as long as there are compassionate people around; people who want to progress along with others and not at the expense of others.

//In a democracy, you cannot and should not check people who are elected by the people. Let the checking part be best left to people, they do it the correct way.//

Well, democracy has it's own pitfalls and short comings. Not every person elected by people can become a real leader; and not every leader can become a statesmen. If "winnability" is the only criterion, then God save us.
Leaving political affiliations aside, what contribution (as a parliamentarian and policy decision maker) can you expect from people like Botsa Jhansi (wife of Botsa Satyanarayana and she already won in the past) or Vallabhaneni Vamsi or Allu Aravind? There is a good chance for real, that these people will end up in Indian parliament soon/again.

Shashi Tharoor, P. Chidambaram, YSR or anyother congress man

bro .. first let any congress man grow other than the Nehru-Gandhis. Let leaders be born from the public, not by nominations and families. Let the grind of democracy give us the finest men, who the people themselves elect.
"

I am reminded of a quote from Shawshank Redemption, my favorite movie, "I have to remind myself that some birds weren't meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knew it was a sin to lock them up does rejoice."

In a democracy, you cannot and should not check people who are elected by the people. Let the checking part be best left to people, they do it the correct way.

Chidambaram is a nice guy. He is a critic of free market and leans a bit towards socialism. I like him. I don't know what he is doing in Home Ministry. He should be back as a Finance Minister ASAP. I think he will also make a good PM.

How about Shashi Tharoor; may be 10 years down the lane?
He is contesting from Trivandrum on INC ticket. I really want to see him in Lok Sabha.
