you can have different accounts for each of you so that ur earnings can go there individually. but if both have powers to all those accounts that would be suffice. i have 3 accts where my sal goes into two accts and my wifes 20% to one acct and 80% totally to the 3rd acct which i wont touch unless needed. but both of us have rights on all 3. naa toli santakam.... | ||

Jodha, mee bank lo manager can notarize the will document for you. He/she will need to see yours and your husband's drivers license. That's all. Put the name of someone you trust with your child's well being as the guardian for the kid. Like cjeevi said I put my will doc in the safe deposit box. You can also leave one with a friend or family member you trust. | ||

bottomline It is always advised to write something and notorize it, keep a copy with you and keep the original in bank locker. btw i keep all my stuff like certificates etc in a locker which i pay $125 per year or so. it is also advised by lawyer that each year when u file taxed make two columns like what you own and what you owe and update that list and staple along with your will. I talked to a lawyer and he did for above $100 for both me and my wife. when i wrote the will there was a medical paper as well which says something but simply speaking "if i am in a condition like vegetable after an accident or something rather than keeping me like that i signed that paper which asks to pull the plug" mass bro edo nee abhimanam but many desis dont write or do simple and low cost things which will become very horrible later. naa toli santakam.... | ||

May be true for any stable property, but usually for any investment accounts, IRAs, 401k etc you open they will ask in the application who will be the beneficiery in the event of death. So I guess, courts will honor that whether or not a will exists. | ||

In the US, when you die your estate (your assets) go thro the probate process and depending on the state you live in, probate process is long, expensive and in the end very little of your assets will go to your dependents. Everyone should have a will in America. Write up something, seal it, get it notarized and keep it at some place where people will know to look if you die. Even if it's not a formal doc written by a lawyer, as long as it's written by you and notarized the courts will honor it. List your assets in it, list your wishes for whatever you are leaving behind, who you think should take care of ur kids and so on. If you have kids and major assets, it's a good idea to go thro the whole process with an attorney. I update mine everytime my address changes or something major happened in my life. | ||
