Fact Sheet: KCR token angers T-pundits

The Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) on Monday faced the rather odd allegation of favouring Vedic pundits from Andhra over those from Telangana.

Trouble erupted when Vedic pundits who took part in the 27-day Vishwa Shanti Yagam organised by the TRS at Telangana Bhavan were paid for their services. Monday was the final session of the yagam organised for world peace, victory of the TRS in the coming polls and creation of separate Telangana.

After the morning puja which was attended by Mr Chandrasekhar Rao and other party leaders, the Vedic pundits were handed over dakshina (payment) packets. "When we opened the packets we were shocked to find only Rs 3,000 for the 27-day yagam," said Radhakrishna, a pundit from Nalgonda. "We were promised Rs 500 per day per person."

The pundits from Telangana became more angry after discovering that about a half-a-dozen scholars from Andhra had been paid Rs 25,000 each and had also been given a gold bracelet each.

"We did not expect this kind of discrimination," said another pundit from Nalgonda.

After they protested loudly, Mr Chandrasekhar Rao summoned them and heard them patiently and finally handed over cheques for Rs 13,500 each at the rate of Rs 500 per day.

Astrologer Ramana Rao, a confidant of the TRS chief, said the problems occurred because of the mischief of middlemen.

"Mr Chandrasekhar Rao is a great philanthropist and he paid more than he promised," said the astrologer. He made light of the protests by a section of pundits and said they were paid according to their experience. Around 200 Vedic pundits were involved in the yagam of which 54 were brought from Andhra region, and the rest from Telangana and other districts.

"The 54 Vedic pundits I brought along had no problems," he said. "It was one trouble monger who kicked up a row."
