I think I watched this in 1989 during one of the film festivals in our college. As opposed to what by now most of the critics dub this as a lesser film of Hitchcock's, I feel it's one of his best films, more so because of the intricate plot involving 4 keys. Even after watching the film, most viewers think there are only 3 keys, but there are 4 keys and husband makes 2 failed attempts to open the door and those are the 2 keys that do not fit the door. Don't want to elaborate more on this, as it will deprive the viewing pleasure of those yet to watch. I think the reason for this film not being considered as one of his best films is: It has a single living room setting and the story involves few characters. The same critics think very high of Rear Window, which actually is not a very good mystery because the hero thinks his neighbour killed his wife and it was shown that the neighbour indeed killed his wife in the end. How the hero proves that the neighboor kille dhis wife forms the crux of the plot, however the fact that we know that neighbour killed his wife and don;t learn anything new, deprives us the pleasure of true mystery. It was made during the phase when Hitchcock churned out, what most critics now reckon as 4 of his best films viz...Psycho, Rear Window, North by Northwest and Vertigo. I never felt Rear Window and North by North West to be his best films. I feel Vertigo, which was a commercial disaster when released, now reckoned as his best work, is the one I like most, Psycho being the closest second. Hitchcock is one director who truly thinks that films are made on the paper and film making is just packaging. "Movies are craft, they're not art. The art comes out of the craft.
