No to dowry, yes to caste Staff Reporter This is the general refrain of prospective brides and grooms at ‘Swayamvaram’ HYDERABAD: “I do not seek any dowry but it will be better if my life partner is from my own caste,†turned out to be the general inclination among most prospective grooms and brides who participated in a ‘Swayamvaram’ on Sunday. Organised by ‘idontwantdowry.com’, a portal floated by city-based NKG Matrimonial Services, the participants came truly dressed for the occasion. Even as they clearly stated their reservations against dowry system, for many who took the small dais, ‘the holy alliance’ would be with someone “preferably from my own communityâ€. “Earlier I couldn’t afford to give dowry. But though in a position to offer it now, I am not interested as I don’t have a good opinion about it,†felt G. Vanaja, a software engineer with multinational software company. Obsession Narrating how obsessed her colleagues are with dowry and keep discussing the issue even at workplace she said, “They increase their value in terms of dowry with every hike they get.†More than 300 participants attended the ‘Swayamvaram’ at the jam-packed conference hall in Ravindra Bharati here. People representing different backgrounds, from a doctor working in the U.S. and software engineers to those in smaller-paying jobs, participated in the event. The event also saw some divorcees and single parents seeking a second chance at matrimony. |
