Unorthodox:

neeku film related stuff inta idea undani naaku teliyadu. Nice post. Tarkovysky's films are something else, Andrei Rublev, though in black & white, except for the climax, is a painting in motion. The only other director who created similar influence on me is Budhdhadev dasgupta. I also like Keislowski, but his visuals are on a smaller canvas and his focus is on screenplay.

Unortho,

I watch some movies just for the heck of them, but there are some movies that i keep watching over and over again, to observe and understand subtle details. I do not know much about the technical details of the art per se, but i can appreciate the art.

A friend of mine referred to Solayris, i was just awestruck by the progression and depth of the movie. It just stayed on mind for a long time. Then i watched, Stalker and Andrey Rublyov . Rublyov has some scenes that cant be perfected any more, its just a visual treat.

I havent watched on of Budhadev Dasgupta movies, i will make sure i will watch one, any recommendations. Did you watch any movies of Adoor Gopalakrishnan, i heard his movies are great too, but never watched one. I would like to watch his movies too.

film-fan,
mundu post lo ninnu miss ayyanu. Elaa vunnaavu. Fellini di Satyricon laanti films ki oscar lu vachchaayi, hmm... There must be some reason why Academy did not recognize Tarkovysky...I never really realized that he did not get many awards...however lot of film lovers exposed to international cinema always mention that the tarkovysky is a painter on celluliod...

I think Rublev was orignally banned and then was rushed to Cannes...Bergman became a big time fan of tarkovysky...

tarkovysky had shown the world what cinema can achieve...

There could be a few faults, I was aware of them at that time, but despite it I thought we will be able to make the film work. It was confidence. But, then, you get on--Mani Rathnam

Tarkovysky's films are comparable to literature and painting. However, Tarkovysky is not very famous like other non-us directors popular in west such as kurosawa,Fellini, Goddard, Bergman or Ray. But if you watch one of his films, you will know what I am talking about. But a caution, don;t lok for the narrative, because his films go in elliptical narrative and arrested story movement, often ending in episodic structure...

ms,

killer babai,
Please send me a mail at unorthodox at rediffmail dot com. I know that you are very knowledgeable(navatarangam site). Are you planning for anything concrete with films? I will try to respond this weekend.

Elca,
I am not denying the capabilities of Palma or Scorcesse. Personally, I beleive Palma is a better director than Scorcesse, who depends less on the narrative. Lesser known films like Carlitos way is one of my favourites. Regarding long take, If I use a steadicam and shoot for 10 minutes by running around, technically that also will be a long take (not referring to goodfellas take, which is too good). What is missing in most of the long takes, including those of directors like Abbas kiarostami, Zaffar Panahi or Mohsen Makhmalbaf, is the aesthetics part of it. I mention these iranian directors because they are being touted as great art directors

Tarkovysky's long takes beat those of anyone's by miles, which are painted on big canvas...oka slow motion lo sports sequence chuusinattuntadi...horse riders attack from Andrei Rublev, I just love it...

Another speciality of Tarkovysky's long take is camera tracking back and forth, left and right, picking the details as the eye sees it...Dziga Vertov once said 'Presenting through camera what eye sees'

There could be a few faults, I was aware of them at that time, but despite it I thought we will be able to make the film work. It was confidence. But, then, you get on--Mani Rathnam

Unortho babai,

great scene adhi, Tarkovsky was a true artist. nenu konni movies choosanu, no doubt he is much more than a story teller.

I always wondered how art evolves over time, due to natural improvement in the artist IQ and also the technical enhancements change art significantly over time, but all these aside an artist with a different vision and style shapes the art form forever, Tarkovsky could easily be one of them. I wondered whether movie making as an art would ever be able to move towards abstraction as much as literature and painting has evolved.

Painting can be cited as a very good case study to understand how art changes over time. to be put it in simple and short ways, with the advent of photography, and digital enhancements artists no more take time to paint something that is real or visually similar to a real objects. this was art of past times, now artists try to replicate their emotions and imaginations in colors and shapes that are not very real.

Movies in that sense have evolved our time too, when technically, cameras were not really good enough to picture a moving object or a thing of beauty, movies used literature and poetry to be more explicit about the thing in description, when an emotion needed to be addressed, we used to have vociferous dialog by the artists to express the emotion, but now the camera can capture the emotions more clearly, and the enhancements in mixing of audio and video capabilities, lets the directors use more subtle expressions, scenes and background score to bring out the emotion. tarkovsky is a pioneer in using all these to bring out the appropriate emotions.

I am yet to see a more abstract movie which is not much real in this sense but could make you feel emotions that the director wants to you to feel. I really hope some day this could happen. Just like music, which is a perfect example of abstract art, it could make you feel emotions even without an literary contribution to the piece.

A close to 6 minute long take from Tarkovysky.

Tarkovysky, like pudovkin, believes in preserving time and space of a scene, as opposed to manipulating audiences' emotions through 'Montage of attractions', theorised and shown by Sergei Eisenstein in such films as Strike and Battleship potemkin. Even today, most of European film makers follow this visual style

Thank you guruvu gaaru, I am privileged to be your true fan. Cinema of Tarkovysky continues to amaze me. In 'Sacrifice', his last film, he asks the question 'Man is suffering but he doesn;t know why', let that be as it may, it's not so much the content of the film that's often discussed, but pure magic, of Mise-en-scene, blocking and camera choreography, he casts on us...

The director who gave us just 7 films from a career spanning 3 decades, is right up there on top in the film buffs' list of great directors. Somehow, kurosawa's visuals look so artificial to me, I never liked him except for few action sequences and some memorable scenes such as storm episode from 'Dersu Uzala'.

Tarkovysky's visuals are often marked with clearly etched out front, middle and back grounds forming such an aesthetic impression; in the above link, the whole scene looks like a painting, with water logs drawing similarity to patches of a paint brush...

15 years after I watched his second film, I guess, 'The passion according to Andrei aka Andrei Rublev', the visuals of that film still haunt me, because no film before that ever gave me such an aesthetically pleasing experience...

Andrei Tarkovysky, the true poet of cinema, preserves and sculpts in time and space !!!
There could be a few faults, I was aware of them at that time, but despite it I thought we will be able to make the film work. It was confidence. But, then, you get on--Mani Rathnam
