Any idea if this cost can be avoided if we use digital technology..
Is this technology used for telugu films
?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_cinema

The cost can be avoided by using dv format(camcorder) or HD format(people are calling this digital when applied to films, though strictly speaking anything in digital format is digital)...

But this is a huge compromise on quality...

There was a telugu film made in DVX-100A panasonic camcorder, telecined and blown up to 35 mm...the final cost was 35 lakhs...I didn;t watch this film...

I also happen to watch a film called 'Dulhan made in USA' originally shot on DVX-100A or B--telecined and blown up to 35mm and the cost was around $50k...it sucks...

Coming to HD, a professional HD camcorder could cost anywhere between 50(pana)-100k(sony)...cost wise HD is not as cheap as DV...

Keeping the costs aside, the biggest hurdle at this point is the quality...DV or HD is not quite like film...everything looks beautiful on film...

People say HD has similar resolution to film which is a big debate...cadence, light contrast, depth of field are still big issues with non-film media...till those issues are resolved, DV or HD are not yet there...

Instead think about how you can avoid costs in making a movie on film medium itself...

There could be a few faults, I was aware of them at that time, but despite it I thought we will be able to make the film work. It was confidence. But, then, you get on--Mani Rathnam

It would cost 35 lakhs for a two and half hour movie for just film and processing cost with not lot of takes

It would cost 35 lakhs for a two and half hour movie for just film and processing cost with not lot of takes. Depending on what you want to add to this...the costs add up...remunerations of cast and crew, songs , fights, sets are the ones that majorly add to the cost...APV was made under 1 crore and for one song Hari went abroad and it alone costed him 10 lakhs...

What adds to budget depends on who you are hiring for your work...a first time cinematographer might work for 3 lakhs while a guy like chota k naidu commands 35 lakhs...A guy like Santosh Sivan might not even accept unless he likes the script...

So I would say it needs a 40 lakhs of minimum budget and depending on how much you pay for artists and what kind of film you are making, the budget can be estimated.

I guess for 80 lakhs 'A film by Aravind' was exceptionally well made...

There could be a few faults, I was aware of them at that time, but despite it I thought we will be able to make the film work. It was confidence. But, then, you get on--Mani Rathnam

Experimental ,low budget films have a good chance of succeeding in hindi than telugu...

Low budget ayinaa, high budget ayinaa content lekapothe outright gaa reject chesthunaru audience...High budgets can still survive bcoz of the hype and stars...

It's better to make simultaneously in Telugu and Hindi, but that would shoot up the budget
